haha ok makes sense
i got 4 acceptances out of 4 replies so far but not enough aid
i’m still waiting for the uni i soo want to go to which hopefully will include a lot more scholarhips!

I’m not sure yet… I just got my UCLA acceptance yesterday with a 10k scholarship, but that still leaves a good 37k to cover so I don’t know. So far 3/3 though (including UNSW) just waiting on Financial aid from my top choice and the two east coast schools that I applied to (though I’m not expecting to get into either of them)
how about you ajbwells?

got me a likely letter from a pretty sweet east coast school (apparently you’re not meant to drop the name lol), just have to wait to see what kind of aid gets offered.
well done on UCLA, dude, that’s great! same to you, st.g.i.!
hopefully the states will be awash with aussies this fall :)

haha hopefully
congrats to all of you who got accepted
now lets just hope the yanks pour us with their money!!

congrats on the likely letter… I had never even heard of them until I heard of people who applied to UCLA engineering getting them haha. I’ve heard though that likely pretty much = gotten in so congrats and hope you get in… tell us once you do haha!

Yeah just waiting on aid, I would pretty much give an arm and a leg to go to my dream school… been like in love with it since 9th grade… lived and breathed it and probably drove a few of my friends crazy in the mean time. But we’ll see.

Oh yeah, we’ll totally take over the US this year!

Beeish:
Which ivy did yo apply for?

I applied for two… but don’t really want to talk about it till admissions come out. it’s just a superstition. Like I refused to post my status on the USC forum until I got in

Good Luck anyway beeish!
Looking forward to your good news!!!~
Pray for you…

thanks! I need all the help I can get, especially for FA GAH!

Good luck for next year! Your class of 2014 right? if you need any help feel free to PM okay? I am more than willing to read essays and all that stuff
If I’ve made a mistake and you aren’t Class of 2014 please ignore that and GOOD LUCK for admissions decisions!

yep! I’m 2014er…thanks for you offer of help…I just need so much…
Next year’s FA is even tougher…T.T
When I finish my essay, I’ll PM you ^-^

awesome! I will for sure give that a read for you… now that I’m finished and all have nothing better to do with my time haha.

I KNOW! With this finiancial crisis! but you never know… alot of private schools increased their financial aid this year… it just means admissions are going to be tougher next year!

Is “Yanks” meant to be condescending or endearing? I don’t take offense to it either way, I’m just curious.

Beeish, haven’t you start uni in Australia? Or you are determined to go to America so ignored the admission here?

Hi guys. I have not been on here in ages; but wanted to check up on where everyone is at.

Gook luck to all the class of 13’s…

I just wanted to drop a word of caution: if not already known for all the people applying to the class of 14’. Be VERY careful in deciding what type of admission you are going to apply for. many people will tell you they know how to read australian schools raw scores–but from my experience of talking to people working on admissions at Columbia, Smith, Barnard and Yale…they have no idea. you may be better off waiting for your HSC results.

I say this because I applied to Columbia ED. I also happened to go to one of the top schools in state (80% of people in my grade got UAI’s of over 95…yeah). However, I came from a particually smart year group and we scaled up heaps more than what the school expected. so my counceller gave me bad transcripts (in filling out the reports saying i came from an average school etc …although i really dont think she cared!) and so you could imagine all my scores in the 80’s looked bad!!

I eventually got in a) on my SAT scores b) on my essay and c) through a family friend that gave a scholarship to the school for his daughter and gave it in my name…

However, i decided not to go to Columbia anyway. I realized that usyd was as amazing as columbia! I got into the University of Sydney (media and communications) and decided to do that on much advice because I can do what I actually want to do (journalism, i would have to do a straight BA at Columbia) and i will go for postgrad.

and I love the university of sydney!

good luck guys!!!

cheers mate.
best of luck with USyd; I know quite a lot of the mecom kids and they’re a great bunch…

frankechanel
wow! so you got in but not decided to go?
Did you apply for financial aid? It seems like you didn’t!
I’m thinking about applying to Yale, Columbia and Wellesley, any suggestions?
The bigger problem is: I need FA…- -
USyd is great! If I’m not admitted by any of my dream schools in the US…I may join you in USyd!

Friend of a friend got into MIT. I sneaked into Dartmouth. April 1st…here we come.

Woah it’s really great and inspiring for us 2014ers to see Aussies doing so well in US uni admission
And this fin. crisis have such bad timing since aid is like the biggest deciding factor for me!

frankechanel - Just a question, you applied ED to Columbia, what iis the reason you’re going to tell Columbia as to why you’ve decided not to enrol? Wherever you go - I’m sure you’ll be great and Usyd is my top choice for AUS unis
It’s gorgeous

yeah, it was a big decision; and a lot of people told me I would regret it. But you know what? I don’t. I want to be a journalist, and I would not be able to do that at an ivy league school in the US for undergrad, so I decided to do a BA and be a journalist here and try my luck going to Columbia for postgrad. It’s not like Im running out of time or anything, I have many years ahead of me and living in sydney then new york as an adult will make me a more diverse person i think. (i had to move away from home to go to usyd, 6 hours away from home. Im not a person who is particually close to their family; but i can tell you the first 2 weeks are really hard)

I got out of the decision on a few terms. My dad is a lawyer and he found somthing binding in the contract to do with my age being an australian citizen, and of course being international they dont have as much control over you. its not like i was going to another ivy league or had even been accepted into another university)

And yes, us university of sydney meco kids are a lovley motley crew!

So I guess what I am saying is you can think at a time you want somthing more than anything in the world–but sometimes somthing even more fab will come along. I know people who go to columbia and i dont think it was the right school for me, i dont think any us school was right for me! but ask me a year ago and columbia was everything to me…
its really not the end of the world if it dosent happen…and going postgrad is WAY cheaper too, and your more likley to get in!

that saying, i know some people who have already gotton in in the states and i could not be more happy or excited for what lies ahead for them!

oh and one last and VERY final note:

we have a lot of US exchange kids at Usyd as you can imagine. (and i guess a lot of you know sydney is ranked 30th in the world and likt 15th for BA programs)
…and these kids come from these tiny liberal arts colleges ranked way below and ALWAYS talk down on us like our australian education is inferior to their US ones.
(i looked 4 of the kids schools, average SAT scores 480 CR and 470 M ??? umm hello?)

So NEVER let those US kids treat you like your australian education is inferior. just do us proud and show them how smart and well educated you really are!
