Hey everyone. I’ve been a member of this forum for ages but has totally forgotten about it until I found this thread from google today. =)

I’m a U.S citizen studying in Melbourne. Even though I’ve never been to the states before it has always been my dream to go to college there. As I’m in year 11 this year, I’ll be doing my applications next year. The thing that’s really worrying me right now is my extra-curricular. I browsed through some people’s profiles the other day and I realised they had lots of activities and leadership positions. (xxx club president, …team captain etc.)I do have some activities going on but none of them really have any leadership positions available… we don’t really do the captain/president thing at my school(choir, concert band, fencing). Do you think the colleges will take the fact that I go to an Australian school into account?

Thanks everyone.

Hey natalie welcome to our little world of craziness :)

I am/was kinda in the same sitch as you, I am/was a US citizen living in Sydney um I had been to the US before (spent a semester there in 2006) cause my family lives there, but yeah not the point. I was class of 2008 (hence the am/was above haha) and am heading off the USC in Los Angeles in about 10.5 weeks! I was kinda in the same position as you about extra curriculars, (okay guys stop mocking me NOW, I know you’re doing it) but yeah PM me and I’d be happy to talk about applying as a US citizen living abroad with you if you want, particularly the like differences in opportunities and school systems. I ran into TONS of problems doing my apps last year and freaked out numerous times and I didn’t really have any help so more than happy to help someone else
Besides not exactly doing anything at the moment haha.

Also be very very very glad you are a US citizen it means you a) don’t need a visa and b) can apply for financial aid (both of which are awesome beyond belief cause as most of the people on this thread can tell you applying for visas can be a pain in the butt)

@natalie.

to get an answer to your question. (Unlike Miss Beeish who rambled on as usual :p) say if you’re applying to universities that are not top 30 ranked, then you don’t need spectacular “im the president of every single club avaliable at my school plus my local area” But you DO need SOME sort of activity that you maybe participated or volunteered at etc or even if you play sports or something to show that you are not someone that doesnt do anything other than just attend school.

But on the other hand, if your planning for Ivy League calibre schools then you need to do some leadership activities or make up for it with spectacular results (and i mean spectacular). Otherwise, don’t worry so much about extra-curricular activities.

People tend to look at activities as a majorly important part of the application but I dont think it is. Most focus is on your scores and your essay. And yes unless the admission staff have no idea, they will take into account that not many at-school groups/activities are offered in Australia compared to the US

@Beeish. I guess I need to get on msn soon because you’re obviously re-directing your ramblingness away from our conversation to this forum lol

well is you 7th sense working now?

it is and i see you’re on msn but unfortunately im going off because i need to start writing this stupid placement exam lol and im sooo tired. :p

yes indeedy I am, I only went on cause you were online so
maybe I will just not be on for the next little while so ha
haha placement exams, I need to do them, math and french :(

Hey dragons (is it alright if I call you that because your user name is very long =P), I am planning to apply to some Ivy league schools though. =( The only leadership positions in my school involve being school captains, house captains, library captain, chess captain and computer captain in year 12. They all involve a huge amount of public speaking which I’m not particularly fond of, and I doubt I’ll get elected school captain even if I do try. =(I guess I’m probably not an ivy-league calibre student but it doesn’t hurt to try right? By the way, does spectacular results mean 2400 SAT and flawless grades? If so I’m as good as dead.

Placement exams? Sound fun. =P
