How is Austin College Sherman? My child received almost full at UTD and presidential scholarship at Austin College.
Cost of education at Austin College is 50k or more this year and we received close to 30k. My child id going to be a premed and I don’t want a loan on him with 80k already. My child is a great kid
Any advise.

What is her intended major? UTD is very good for STEM.
Has she visited both schools? Med school costs a lot of money. It might be best to save your money to help her with med school. Dallas offers much better internship opportunities.
We would be happy to discuss the benefits of a small liberal arts college and the success of our students into health science programs. Many graduate and professional health related university programs value liberal arts students because of their critical thinking skills, engagement with faculty, and access to research that many students in large universities are not able to receive at the undergraduate level. Dallas is only an hour away and a very high percentage of our students complete internship experiences before graduation. Please give us a call at 903-813-3000 and we’d be happy to chat more with you and set up a time for you to visit.
Daughter is going to be a premed with Biology major. She has been selected to Collegium V program at UTD. My only concern is that she will be lost in a big university and it will be very difficult for her to get all opportunities with all competitors though she holds great scores too. Is there any way to get more money from Austin College as she wanted to go to a small university.Money is the only barrier for Austin College.
ssnyder1- Will call you tomorrow, thanks.
If you have to pay 20K, she can earn about 3K over the summer, about 2K over the year (conservative estimates), and take the 5.5K federal loan, reducing parental contribution to about 10K.
Or is it 20K in addition to federal loans, work study, and other student contribution?
How can she earn 3K over summer and 2K over the year? We came up the plan but If she takes 10K loan and we pay every year it won’t have any interest? I will pay from my pocket 10K and planning to take 10K loan on student side and will try to pay as much as possible. Will she get 10K loan?
Again Thanks.
NO, the maximum federal loan is 5.5K for a first year student. If you want to take more, you have to take on a Parent PLUS loan (unless there’s a cheaper state loan offered).
3K can be earned starting to work mid-May (or, if you want to spread that out more, she can start working now). 2K during the year = ask for work study. 1,000 a semester isn’t much - it’s about $250 a month, or about 8 hours of work a week. If she works in the library, most of the time she’ll be paid to read her textbooks waiting for students to check books out.
Collegium V is a terrific program and they have smaller classes, a special dorm, etc., creating a small community on the UTD campus.
Austin is also a terrific college, but if they can’t increase her financial aid, it may not be possible.
Is your child a ds or dd? Not that it really matters, but I prefer when a poster is truthful. Or at least consistent. ;
What is the bottom-line cost difference per year? UTD is a great school. If there’s more than, say, 15K, I say go to UTD and don’t look back.
