Hey people of College Confidential,
I’m an Australian year 12 (senior, though I know my username is AustralianJunior :’) ) student who’s always had an interest in the US, and sometime last year developed an interest in studying in the states.
Truman is so unbelievably cheap! It’s got rigorous academics, a small campus and all round seems pretty decent! But…Kirksville. I’m from Brisbane, Australia. To give you an idea, we have 2 million people in the city and 2.5 in the surrounding area. Big place. I’m used to the cafe culture and general ‘hipster’ vibe of the place and my social circles. Would I survive in Kirksville?
I believe that it could make for a really interesting experience where I would make lots of close friends. But I really want to know if I’ll be bored. Are there parties? What is the dorm life like? Put everything aside, is it FUN? 
I appreciate your help and would especially love to hear from current students!
I’m a freshman here at Truman, and while there are a lot of good things about the school, Kirksville life can be pretty bleak, especially in the frigid winter months (though we have had some unusually nice days lately). There just isn’t much to do off-campus. I’m from St. Louis, and while I didn’t think I would miss it that much, I was wrong–around here, you’ll almost always be looking for your fun on-campus. There are some good restaurants (La Pachanga has the best Mexican food anywhere), but this place is about as devoid of culture as they come.
I will say that Truman has certainly been an interesting experience thus far! Greek life spices things up a bit (I do know of fraternities that have allowed international students to pledge, even if they’ll only be around for a year), and the student activities board does its best to bring fun and exciting things to campus.
TL;DR, if you’re looking for a vibrant, cultural community off-campus, you should probably look elsewhere. But Truman has good academics and a very friendly, down-to-earth student body. The people here are what make it!
