Can others please comment on what they have done with Swab/Cadet to save on car insurance. Our current carrier (Progressive) offers no discount for the fact that son is away at school. Thanks.

If he owns his own car back at home then look into him getting his own policy through USAA for which he is now eligible.
It may be cheaper than keeping him on your insurance.

I called my State Farm agent just after receiving a $750 premium bill (6 months) for my son's truck. Told her he was leaving for the USCGA at the end of June.

She took him off the policy as a principal driver (bill went down to $168!) but still has him listed on the policy for all of our vehicles as a permitted driver, as long as we give him permission to drive the vehicles when he is home on leave.

Super. I'll ask Progressive about that. If unresponsive I'll give State Farm a call.

Allstate said that as long as D is in the military (they considered service academy as same policy) and not able to drive they removed her from the policy. They said she is still covered during the brief periods she is on leave (Christmas, Spring Break, 3 week leave in the summer). So my insurance dropped considerably.

We had the same experience as CGAMOM2012. Our cadet is covered under our policy without any additional cost, so he can drive when he is home and we do not pay anything for that.
