Automatic Admission Decisions??

I applied to UT Austin and A&M College Station for Fall 2017. I live in Texas and my class rank is 13/362 so I know I’m well under the top 7% automatic admission requirement for UT and 10% for A&M. I was just wondering when the automatic admits typically hear back with their decisions? I completed my UT application two days after the applications opened and the A&M one six days after applications opened. Also, I know that even with automatic admissions I am not necessarily guaranteed to be accepted into my major, like how it’s harder to get into engineering at A&M. My first choice major for both universities is International Relations and Global Studies which is in the College of Liberal Arts. My second choice is Environmental Science in the College of Geosciences. My guess is that it would be harder to get into Environmental Science but I really want to get in my first choice major but I don’t know what the acceptance stats are. This might be a silly question to some but I really don’t know how competitive a liberal arts major is so if someone would tell me if that’s at all a hard major to get in to that would be great!

For UT you will get a message on your My Status page that says you were accepted to the school but that you will get notice about your major later. Could be months before you get accepted into your major. With your class rank though, and as long as you didn’t bomb the SAT/ACT, you should be ok for the college of liberal arts. Typically liberal arts is one of the easier colleges to get into at UT. Same goes for TAMU obviously since it’s a less competitive school as far as admissions go. Essentially, just relax, you’re gonna be fine.

By the way you might want to change your profile pic to something less identifying. It’s called college confidential for a reason.

Oh shoot haha thank you, it’s my dog now. Yeah I had figured that the college of liberal arts would be much easier to get into, I just wasn’t sure how the IRG major was. You’re right, I just need to relax :-SS

Yeah I think it’s highly unlikely that you would be denied from Liberal Arts with that rank, so I just don’t think you should be worrying at all. What was your SAT/ACT though? Because you might want to seriously consider applying to Liberal Arts Honors or Plan 2 if your test scores and ec’s are good enough.

I would suggest you go to the UT specific forum. Click on the College & Universities tab located in the left margin. Follow it to the University of Texas specific forum and post your question.

@danfer91 I only took the SAT, not the ACT but I did pretty decently on the SAT. My score was 1340 the first time I took it and I didn’t take it again. I know I could have gotten a better score the second time around but I wasn’t really interested in Honors. I’ve been involved in community service and a lot of different clubs and honor societies in school, but I haven’t had any leadership positions or anything like that and I know that’s what the honors societies look for so I didn’t apply. I know that it wouldn’t hurt to apply for honors even if I didn’t get in, but I feel like my chances aren’t very good. What is Plan 2?

Plan 2 is a very selective Liberal Arts honors program at UT. The 25th-75th percentile for admitted students was 1390-1570 and about 2/3 of them were in the top 5% of their class, so it’s rather elite. I think you should definitely send an application to the regular Liberal Arts Honors program though. You would have a very good chance of getting accepted with the combination of your SAT and class rank. Be sure to write great essays as well. Don’t sell yourself short, you’re a very solid applicant.

Thank you so much! I will definitely look into that!
