Automatic Full Ride with My Stats?

@“aunt bea” I only got around 1000 for each Cal schools from Cal Grant. Thank you though

@ucbalumnus Sadly, it is that way. It’s frustrating.

@austinmshauri I haven’t received my financial aid awardletters back from the California colleges

Several CSU’s are higher ranked than some of the UC’s. I would do a search for the rankings to show your parents that CSU’s are not trash. Which CSU’s accepted you? Any chance you can take a Gap year and reapply next year?

So, are you going to apply for that free tuition deal at Wyoming? Loans, a job, and hopefully parental help should cover room, board, books, and travel.

Your parents have champagne taste and a beer budget.

@gumbymom no, i want to start right away. SJSU, Sacramento, Humboldt, and San Francisco. I’m not pciking SF tho because its in my city and i wanna be away.

@nw2this I don’t see the full tuition offer on their site?

Look for wue/wiche.

Check the link in post #12.

@nw2this it doesn’t go with WUE so I wouldn’t get full tuition.but thank ya!

What do you mean “it doesn’t go with WUE”?

MYOS1634 - I’m not understanding how that’s a full tuition scholarship. Doesn’t say that you would have to pay 150% of resident tuition if you qualify? Plus, the OP would still have to pay for room and board etc. If I’m reading it correctly (and very possibly I’m not), the OP would have to pay approximately $7500 in Tuition as well as room and board etc., for a total cost of approximately $21,000 per year. I doubt that the OP can pay such an amount.

Yes, that’s correct, but while OP WANTS full tuition, with his stats and considering his parents won’t let him attend some schools and that he won’t apply to others, options aren’t numerous, and at least Wyoming’s wue tuition would only be under $7,000, which is way lower than most and comparable in costs to CSUs (currently 27K). Also, if the parents have a problem with a school being too “wild” (ie., Humboldt) or think CSU-Sacramento is “trash” or have another objection to SJSU, UWyoming would look conservative enough and is a state flagship.

CSU Sacramento has at least one praiseworthy student attending it:

OP,

I think you are reading the WY link wrong. There are two scholarships for OOS.

  1. WUE
    http://www.uwyo.edu/admissions/scholarships/non-residents/wue.html

and

  1. Rocky Mountain Scholars.
    http://www.uwyo.edu/admissions/scholarships/non-residents/rms.html

The WUE one is for residents of WUE states and the Rocky Mountain Scholars is for residents of any state. The tables shows the amount of the scholarship by stats. If your stats fall in the yellow area you get full tuition, if they fall in the brown area you get $6,000. The Rocky Mountain Scholars one also has a $3000 pink area so lower stats non-WUE students only get $3,000 while WUE students with these same stats get $6,000.

Really U Wyoming should be added to the automatic full tuition list. @BobWallace

OP and @BobWallace

Never mind I am the one who read it wrong.
:"> :-/

U of Wyo is not a full tuition option. 3 tiers of rocky mountain for OOS OR WUE. Top Tier of Rocky Mountain and WUE are equal with a value of $8900 merit given (150% of instate tuition). As U of Wyo is low tuition to start, it is a good deal and for comparison purposes, only a little bit more than Humboldt at the in state rate. OP would qualify for WUE.

My aerospace engineer husband got his undergrad from SJSU, went on to get his masters from CSU-LB and then an MBA from Seattle U. I would definitely not call it trash. It’s worked out quite well for him.

Humboldt certainly has a rep but depending on the program that OP is interested in…it has some strong points as well (Environmental sciences/engineering in particular) however the other Cal schools OP applied to are all certainly viewed more positively.

I suspect OP’s parents issues are with the towns the schools are located in as much as the schools themselves…

Colorado State may be one to look at as well. There are a number of decent schools in the WUE that might be more palatable to the parents. Western Washington University is excellent. University of Montana…both are in WUE and should have some options that might work. I have no idea though, where they would fall from a deadline perspective. Montana would be a tiny bit more than Wyo with OP’s stats, no clue on WWU but easy enough to find out. CSU would be the most expensive option even with WUE but is a solid school.

It just seems horribly late in the game to be trying to put together a financial aid package. Most of these should be completed by Dec. 1, if not much earlier.

Students seeking merit aid should take both the ACT and SAT, and on seeing which test best suits them take their preferred test six or eight times, so long as they are not applying to schools that demand all scores. Merit scholarships are based in large part on test scores, and taking the test multiple times gives one a better chance to get the money.

Far better to stay out of school a year and get the ACT or SAT up than to start. Once you start college virtually all of the merit aid disappears. This may not be what the OP wants to do, but the alternative was to have taken care of this six months to a year ago.

@ucbalumnus This student qualifies for a Cal Grant. Why did he not get CSU tuition covered? Are they giving him Cal Grant B instead or what? Why isn’t he getting his tuition covered?

@mom2collegekids It wasn’t covered and they havent sent me my letter either
