Not true…I recieved a full tuition scholarship with lower SAT scores…and a 31 ACT/top 10% of my class! They base the merit scholarships on what is available and give them, first come/first serve.

why are there not any california schools listed?

^^^
Because the schools in Calif aren’t known for assured full tuition scholarships. If you know of any, then mention them here.

Calif schools seem to have either assured scholarships for “less than tuition” amounts or they have very competitive merit awards.

[Latest update]

Updated comprehensive list sorted by state.

I have also attempted to calculate the residual cost of attendance (COA) given the scholarship award. NOTE, however, that this was calculated based on each individual college’s published Cost of Attendance, and these estimates may vary in how they are calculated and what costs are included.

Suggest that for schools like UAB, giving a residual COA based on a number of credits per year that will graduate in four years (e.g. for a typical school with 120 credits to graduate, use 30 credits per year as the baseline for residual COA calculations) may be helpful.

For example, UAB’s out-of-state cost with 15 credits per semester, residence hall, and full meal plan is $29,524 per year, so the $15,000 scholarship would leave an out-of-state residual COA of $14,524 per year. The in-state cost is $18,694 per year, so the in-state residual COA would be $3,694 per year.

^^^

True.

But instate students at UAB don’t get that scholarship. For an ACT 28-32, an instate student only gets $7k per year. So, residual cost is much more than $3,694.

instate UAB merit:
<a href=“Error 404 | Not Found”>Error 404 | Not Found;

Full disclosure…I am a University of Alabama (Tuscaloosa) alumni & I currently reside in Tuscaloosa. That being said, my son is a rising senior and UA is at the bottom of his list. Several of you have focused on UAB, but haven’t mentioned UA. UA is well known for giving considerably more aid than UAB or UAH. In addition, they have extremely strong academics. Last year, they had the MOST National Merit Scholars of any public institution. If you are looking for a smaller school UAB is definitely smaller, but sits in the middle of Bham which has a population of 212,000. Tuscaloosa has a population of around 100,000. If aid (especially merit based) is a concern, one should definitely look at UA. Finally, and probably the least of your considerations, the Honors Dorms are AMAZING. The dorms are apartment style housing four students, and each student gets his/her own locking bedroom. We’ve visited numerous schools, and this is the first time we saw this.

If it’s such a great school then why is it not at the top of my son’s list? Would you want to go to college 10 minutes away from your parents? Furthermore, we’ve encouraged him to move away (at least three hours) so he can learn to fend for himself.

Good luck!

^^^^^

Don’t worry, The University of Alabama gets frequent mention on this thread and others. UA also has one of the most popular forums on CC. [University of Alabama - College Confidential](University of Alabama - College Confidential Forums)

Many, many current and future Bama students picked the school after learning about it here on CC.

Yes, it has very generous assured merit scholarships for stats, and many here on CC have gravitated towards the school because of that. Last year’s frosh class was 55% OOS because of the school’s popularity, beauty and very nice facilities.

Good luck to your son. I understand not wanting to go to school “in your own backyard.” But…I hope he remains a Tide fan. ;)

Moderator’s note

The thread loses its effectiveness in providing important information about specific colleges and their policies if individual chance cases are discussed. This thread can only address college policies.

[BGSU University Freshman Academic Scholarship Calculator: Main Campus](<a href=“Scholarships & Financial Aid”>Scholarships & Financial Aid)

Bowling Green State University (Ohio) offers automatic merit aid (close to 80%)… plus an additional $1000/yr if part of the Honors Program. That’s about 90% tuition for in state students. The above link is to a calculator that will immediately tell you amount of merit aid after you plug in your scores/gpa. They accept weighted/non weighted… which ever benefits the student most.

Alabama State does not require a GPA of 3.76. They require an academic GPA of 3.76.

What is the difference between GPA and academic GPA?

I think academic GPA typically only includes your “core” academic courses, English, Math, History/Social Studies, Science, Foreign Language. It probably has different definitions depending on who you ask. Some schools might include everything except PE and band, while others would also exclude other electives, arts and technology classes, etc. I don’t know exactly how Alabama State defines it.

See http://admissions.temple.edu/sites/admissions/files/uploads/Fall2014FreshmanScholarships.pdf

UT-Dallas scholarships are not automatic/guaranteed: “No specific achievement in any category of the AES award factors will guarantee a scholarship.”

Houston Tier One scholarships are not automatic/guaranteed: “When and how are students notified if they have been chosen to receive the Tier One Scholarship?
All students selected as Tier One Scholars will be notified via mail. Students not selected to receive the Tier One Scholarship will automatically receive the Universitys Academic Excellence Scholarship.”

It has been reported in the past that Temple’s scholarships are not automatic (Post 258), but I can’t find any statements on the Temple website that make it clear either way.

where does it say it is not guaranteed either in Dallas or Houston?

Several people I know received the scholarships from UT D, both in and out of state with no issues after meeting the requirements.

Both these schools have no application deadlines. So they have scholarship deadlines and stop issuing scholarships although they are accepting applications until June or later.

This is taken directly from UT-Dallas webpage:
“No specific achievement in any category of the AES award factors will guarantee a scholarship. The AES Program will examine each student’s record in its entirety and additional considerations are made based on the rigor of the courses taken in high school.”

And then this is reported on Univ of Houston’s eligibility page for the Tier One Scholarship:
“Upon admission to the University of Houston, students who meet these initial eligibility requirements will receive a personal letter of invitation from the university explaining all of the steps necessary to compete for the Tier One Scholarship.”

“No specific achievement in any category of the AES award factors will guarantee a scholarship.”

That is more of a disclaimer statement and I am not even sure what it means. I would like to see those rejected who applied based on the early deadline. It says right now that the scholarships are closed for 2013 but students can still apply for admissions.

Same goes for TIER ONE. They are invited to file an application but as long as they meet the requirements, they are given the scholarship.

I am not sure what competitive means for Temple. Does it mean there are a restrictive number? I know a kid from NJ who got it this year for meeting the target numbers.

I am wondering if there needs to be a separate listing of these scholarships which don’t meet some ironclad definitions. It is important that people are aware of them. Is there a separate thread that discusses them calling them NON-AUTOMATIC with some caveat?

UTD and Houston are listed here:
