Hi BobWallace,
Does a diploma from IPFW carry the same weight as the one from the main Purdue campus at West Lafayette? US News Review has classified IPFW as a “Regional Universities (Midwest), Tier 2” whereas Purdue is ranked 62 among the National Universities, and it is well known that Purdue is a top university. But the merit scholarship at IPFW seems to be very good. I guess one has to weigh merit aid against rank.

@ Quiet Thinker…I grew up in Indiana, haven’t lived there in many years but NO a diploma from IPFW doesn’t carry the same weight as one from Purdue or Indiana.

If you attend IPFW and major in Business your degree is from Indiana whereas if you major in Engineerinig your IPFW diploma would be issued from Purdue.

I currently live in North Carolina and same thing goes here, a degree from UNC-Asheville or UNC-Pembroke is not the same as one from UNC (Chapel Hill)

Not saying they (IPFW or UNC regional campus locations) aren’t good schools just honestly answering your question

Quiet…

My H is from Indiana and is a Purdue grad. No, a degree from IPFW is not viewed the same (or even close) to a degree from P or from IU.

another issue is that if your child isn’t from the area, he/she will likely be very lonely at night and on weekends if he attends IPFW since many/most of the students will be either commuters or suitcase schools.

When one considers merit awards, one needs to take into acct what the atmosphere of the school is…are there things on campus during weekends that keep kids there (like big sports), will too many kids go home on weekends or nights, etc?

I’m reminded of one of my son’s classmates. Her parents were thrilled that she got a big scholarship to their alma mater (an OOS univ that was largely commuter/suitcase and wasn’t a top public in that state). The family had all these sentimental hopes of their child graduating from the same univ that they did (they had been locals/commuters). Everyone warned them that this would likely be a mistake for their D. When Fall came, their D happily enrolled. Her Facebook messages quickly told a sad story. Her initial excitement quickly turned to sadness as she found herself alone at night and weekends as friends/classmates headed home. She finished the semester and transferred out…losing merit opps at the other schools where she had offers…except one …Miss State reoffered her their initial offer (this is rare!). She now attends Miss St.

* NOTE, however, that this was calculated based on each individual college’s published Cost of Attendance, and these estimates may vary in how they are calculated and what costs are included*

This is a very good point. Some schools include the best dorms and/or the best meal plan in their COAs…while other schools may just include the standard dorm and the 10 meals per week.

And, some school include ridiculously low estimates for transportation and/or personal expenses. Obviously, if you live a few states away, and the “transportation estimate” is $500, that’s not accurate for your circumstance. And, few kids can live a year on campus and only have $600 in “personal expenses.”

Also, some schools only require a pricey meal plan for frosh year, but since the COA will include that, a student could save money during the later years with either a smaller meal plan or no meal plan.

My kids’ undergrad has a high

I believe the UAH full tuition award is included in the list.
