Automatic Full Tuition / Full Ride Scholarships

Berea, much like Antioch, offers free tuition for all admitted students. However, htere is an income limit so it may not meet your criteria?

[Financial Aid & Scholarships | Admissions - Berea College](http://www.berea.edu/admissions/financialaidscholarships/)

BOB wallace… your uab info may not be correct…after the 15k merit…the residual cost of attendance is only 5-10K NOT 17K… also the award does continue over the next years as long as a 3.0 gpa is maintained.

also they have full ride scholarships for nmf, national acheivement and national hispanic scholars

It’s all a matter of what costs are included. If you look at these estimates from UAB, they show the Cost of Attendance to be roughly Tuition+$16K, and these are 2010-2011 figures:

[Planning for the Cost of College](http://main.uab.edu/Sites/students/71846/)

If you ignore “personal expenses” and “transportation”, which are probably different for each person (but not zero) then you get a figure more like yours.

2011-2012 oos tuition (all alabama schools in ua system will be going up in july as BOT has approved tuition increases)

Fall 2011 First-Year Freshmen Estimated

First-Year Freshman Out-of-State
Tuition and Fees* $14,256
Books and Supplies** $1000
Meal Plan $450 - $3,894
Total $15,706 - $19,150
Residence Hall (Blazer/Camp Hall)*** $5,200
Grand Total $20,906 - $24,350

even the above link the TOTAL including personal expenses etc is 20K then minus 15K equals 5K… not 15 plus 17 left over

attending UAB.

Sample Budget for 2010-2011:

This budget is an example of a student who is an Alabama resident living on campus in the residence halls.

Tuition and Fees: $5,806
Tuition and fees shown are based on fall 2010 rates and a course load of 12 credit hours each semester (fall and spring).

Room and Board: $9,470
This amount would include fall and spring charges for a double occupancy room and a meal plan in the campus dining center.

Books and Supplies: $1,000
Text books and materials for classes average roughly $1,000. This varies slightly based upon the requirements of various courses.

Personal Expenses: $2,000
There are a number of costs to consider that are not included as part of your direct costs at UAB. These costs range from laundry, toiletries, entertainment, etc. These costs need to be managed carefully through the development of a budget.

Transportation: $2,050
Getting to and from campus is an expense that impacts all students. Gas, parking permits, and routine maintenance are expenses that will affect all students in some way.

TOTAL: $20,401
This represents the projected cost of attending UAB for an academic year. While this may vary by student, it does provide a starting point for building a budget.

Some privates to add if any one has time to find the details:
Baylor in TX
Whitworth & Gonzaga in WA
Chapman & St Marys in CA

I know people who have gotten score/GPA based merit aid at those schools.

From UAB, the OOS tuition cost is $759 for the first hour and $579 for each additional hour:

<a href=“Error 404 | Not Found”>Error 404 | Not Found;

It takes 120 hours for a degree, so a full load is 15 hours/semester.

1 hour @ $759/hr + 14 hours @ $579/hr = $8,865 tuition/semester = $17,730 tuition/year

From the UAB CDS:
http://www.uab.edu/opa/images/cds/commondataset.pdf</a></p>

Room = $5,200/year
Board = $3,894/year
Books = $1,000/year
Transportation = $2,175/year
Personal Expenses = $2,000/year

TOTAL = $31,999/year

$32K - $15K scholarship = $17K COA

Now you can take out $2,000 personal expenses, take out $2,175 transportation expenses, take out $3,894 meal plan, and reduce the hours to 12/semester to save $3,474 (even though it’s not enough to graduate in 4 years) and get close to your $5K figure, but I don’t think that’s realistic for a typical student.

I wasn’t able to find automatic full tuition scholarships at any of these schools:

Whitworth: Tuition = $33,676, max automatic scholarship = $19,000
Gonzaga: Tuition = $33,160, max scholarship = $14,000
Baylor: Tuition = $30,586, max stats scholarship = $17,000
Chapman, awards are competitive not automatic
St Mary’s: Tuition = $38,300, max scholarship = $13,000

Perhaps their awards belong in one of these threads:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/848226-important-links-automatic-guaranteed-merit-scholarships.html?highlight=automatic</a></p>

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/211927-institutional-merit-based-scholarships-full-tuition.html?highlight=tuition</a></p>

if you use all those figures, then you would have to do the same for other schools in alabama too :)

ie UA shows total cost of 42K -tuition = 18847 residual:

below shows in-state and out-of-state tuition and fees for the 2012-2013 academic year:

In-State Description Out-of-State
$9950 Tuition and Fees $23700
$12450 Room and Board $12450
$1100 Books $1100
$1259 Transportation $1709
$2708 Miscellaneous $3588
$27467 TOTAL $42547

it is easy to reduce the cost of meals at uab most dorms have kitchens or cooking facilities… ie for both years in dorm son had full size fridge, stove, dishwasher

1000 for books is high

travel… who knows??

dorm fee is 5200, can actually be higher if you go into a 2 bedroom with your own bedroom

Capital University in Columbus, Ohio has a full tuition scholarship with a 28 ACT, 1250 SAT. You must keep a 3.0 GPA and live in the residence halls. You do have to write an essay and have an interview but it is pretty much given to all.

I used last year’s CDS for UA just like I did for UAB:
[2011-2012 Common Data Set | OIRA](http://oira.ua.edu/d/content/reports/2011-2012-common-data-set)

These figures show a cost above tuition of $13,122.

The big difference is in the Room & Board - the CDS has a cost of $8,564, whereas your figures (no source provided) give $12,450.

Probably the best solution is to take out the residual COA figures, because I don’t really have time to quibble over every one of them.

Residual costs can be hard to determine because of how each school determines COA…some schools, like Alabama, pad their COA so that it includes the priciest dorm (the super suites) and the Unlimited Meal plan. If you choose the standard doubles, your cost is a few thousand less, and a meal plan is only required freshman year. So, residual cost can be much lower after frosh year. A good thing, though, is that the Full Tuition scholarship at Bama covers up to 20 credits per semester.

Note: Check to see how many credits per semester a full tuition scholarship covers. Some only cover up to 15 credits.

Sorry Bob, you are right, I was not paying attention to the ‘full tuition’ specifics!

This is a potential problem with the UAB scholarship. It really only covers full OOS tuition at 12 hours/semester. At 15 hours, a year’s tuition is $17,730, reducing the scholarship to only 85% tuition. @ 18 hours / $21,204 / 71%. @ 20 hours / $23,520 / 64%.

OTOH, a high stats kid might easily come in with 6-12 AP credits and could get away with 12-15 hours per semester to graduate in 4 years.

FWIW, my high stats kid wants to take more credits than 12 because she is so curious. My guess is that she is not alone. Her scholarship pays for 18 I think. Great point though about number of credits. That sure changes cost. Three more credits at DD’s school costs us $3300 ( she is taking one class this summer).

Thanks for this thread.

FWIW, my high stats kid wants to take more credits than 12 because she is so curious. My guess is that she is not alone

Unless a student comes in with a lot of the right AP credits, a student wouldn’t graduate on time if they only took 12 credits per semester…and usually scholarships are only for 8 semesters. If a student wants to graduate on time, he/she pretty much needs to take 15/16 credits per semester (sometimes 17/18 credits if an eng’g major or double major).

actually can see what you are saying about credit hours but a bit of refiguring:

<a href=“Error 404 | Not Found”>Error 404 | Not Found;

currently oos tuition (for 12 credits) is 14256… (that would already include the 1st higher cost hour)…each additional oos hour cost is 579.00 per credit

so 15 hours is an additional 1737 or cost of 15993 ( so you are correct it is 993 short of full tuition) for a 28 gpa and 3.0 (how many schools offer that kind of money for those stats?)

so 18 hours would add another 1737 (15993 + 1737= 17730)

just realized an error… have to do it at 15 per semester! not enough coffee this am i guess…so it would be 17730 for 2 semesters at 15 credits per/semester

I decided it was better to start a separate thread for tuition-free colleges like Berea, Cooper Union, etc:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/1359504-tuition-free-colleges.html</a></p>

Keep up the great work Bob Wallace! And thank you!

(Added Prairie View A&M, Jackson State, and Coppin State. Removed Antioch College.)

Updated comprehensive list sorted by state.

I have also attempted to calculate the residual cost of attendance (COA) given the scholarship award. NOTE, however, that this was calculated based on each individual college’s published Cost of Attendance, and these estimates may vary in how they are calculated and what costs are included.
