My son has got admission to CS in School of Engineering. How easy/hard is it to get into classes one wants? From various posts, it seems that classes are large (which may be ok). I also get the impressions that if you are not a Regents scholar (which he is not) you are at a disadvantage for registering for classes. If any current/recent student/their parents can shed some light on it, I would appreciate it. Thanks
Students in engineering have no problem getting classes. Counselors are very understanding as are professors.
Thank you so much @10s4life for being here and answering questions for all of us!
At the CS portion of Engineering Day they told us that professors would help students who showed up on the first day of a class to get permission to enroll in the class if they hadn’t been able to. I have the impression that if it is part of the core curriculum that students would not have this problem very often.
You’ll get classes but you have to be flexible. Because most CS courses are offered every quarter, you may have to wait a quarter, but as long as you work with the CS counselors, they’ll help you move around your schedule so you can still graduate in 4 years.
@BunnyBlue yep that’s true. I got into a closed math class with the section and professor I wanted just by talking with him. They are very accommodating to those in HSSEAS
Thanks for all the responses. This has been very helpful in making the decision on the college.
@BLRparent @BunnyBlue You can get an idea of how full classes have been in past quarters and the current quarter by searching the schedule of classes at https://sa.ucla.edu/ro/public/soc
I was surprised that the intro CS classes don’t seem to fill up, at least according to their site. You can also see which quarters a class is offered and how many lectures of it each quarter.
@youcee If you look at past quarters in the Schedule of Classes, you’re seeing how many people were enrolled at the end of the quarter, not the beginning. The class may have been full when the quarter started, but not at the end (due to drops)
Thanks @youcee. That has increased my optimism. I saw lots of spaces for the spring quarter in some of the CS courses, and we are only a couple of weeks in. I’ll keep your cautionary note in mind too @alicantekid.
