I am 21 and live on my own. I am not a depentant of my parents and I claim myself on my income taxes. The Pell Grant says that I must be 24 in order to qualify on my own. What type of grant money is available for people in my situation?

For fafsa you have to file as a dependent (which means providing parents financial info)unless you meet the criteria to be considered independent (24, married, supporting a child, veteran, ward of the court before 18, member of the armed forces). All grants that I know of require FAFSA to be filed.

It is a difficult situation for you. My son is also 21 and has supported himself for several years before going back to school but is considered a dependent for finaid.

If you get married you can be considered independent. :)
