Hi, I'm an international student and I'm thinking of applying for Cornell,
but I'm 22 and until I actually get accepted and start learning I'll be 23.
I'm afraid I'll be much older than all the other students.
I want to study biochemistry if it matters.

What's the average age for undergraduates at Cornell?

I don’t think your age is a problem. Most American students start college between 17 and 19. My son will be 16. While I don’t think that a 16 year old and a 23 year old would be the best choice for roommates, it is fine for classmates.

You will be older than most, but I wouldn’t let it stop you. The older students mix with the younger if they want. You’ve probably had more life experience than a lot of the undergrads so you might find the grad school students more in your social realm. Some are much older, like in their 60s. I didn’t see them show up at parties necessarily, but they got along with everyone just fine in classes.

My D is a senior at another school. A top LAC. Her best friend at school is 32 yrs old. My D is a few days away from being 22. They just clicked.

My D’s friend is in a special program for CC transfer student. These are generally under privileged or minority students. That’ s why she is there. My D’s friend just got accepted at Columbia for grad school.

23 is still very near the other students ages. You should have no problem.

23 shouldn’t be an issue. One of my good friends at Cornell was an international student who was about 23 when he started.
