Average Day at Rice

Recently, I have become really interested in Rice, so can anyone tell me what is an average day at Rice like...from when you get up until you go to sleep (if you go to sleep lol)

Also, what are the professors, people, and the residential college and dorm rooms like?

There is no good answer to this. The best one I can come up with is you get up, do what you want and go to bed. How much work you do, what you do, what you consider fun, what activities you are involved in, whether you live on campus, what your major is etc. are all up to you.

Rice allows nearly unlimited freedom. That is what makes it awesome.

Antarius’s answer is technically correct, but I don’t really think this thread is useful unless you have some concrete responses. In that spirit, here’s what I did yesterday…bear in mind that I’m an overloaded senior with a few campus leadership positions. As was stated above, Rice is what you make it - you can do as much or as little as you want.

8:30 - 12:30 Class (bioengineering senior design, history of modern middle east, biosystems transport phenomena)
12:30 - 1:00 Lunch at a residential college other than my own with the group of students I advised during orientation week, and a few of my other friends who live there
1:00-4:30 Did some work in lab
4:30-5:30 Responded to e-mails, goofed off in another friend’s suite
5:30-6:30 Dinner on the academic quad for Rice day (our 99th anniversary of being a real school). Got interviewed for a campus video story campaign, and had an impromptu meeting with a team I’m organizing an event with in March. That sounds early but we’re all friends.
6:30-7:00 Went over to campus coffeehouse for some caffeinez, saw a bunch of random friends.
7:00 - 9:00 Brainstorming meeting for my senior design group (class stuff)
9:00-10:00 Meeting with my residential college masters, RAs, and fellow executive council members to talk about residential college government stuff
10:00 - 10:30 Larger assembly with entire residential college (where we get food, people make announcements, etc)
10:30 - 12:00 Went to the gym and ran a lot
12:00 - 3:00 homework, studying for an exam
Today: woke up at 9:30, kept working (my first class today is at 1), procrastinated on here

Hope that was informative. One of my suitemates is an exchange student who is basically here for fun/cultural experience, so her day is always very different from mine - she takes tours of Houston for an architecture class, does her work off-campus at coffeeshops, take yoga classes at the gym, and takes a lot of classes she didn’t have time to take for fun as an undergrad.

Silentsailor, obviously you’re very busy – and I just wanted to thank you for making the time to share “a day in the life” with everybody… May the rest of your very productive senior year be filled with memories that you’ll enjoy for years to come!

I am a freshman, and I absolutely love it at Rice! A day in my life goes something like this: On some days I finish classes by lunch, and if not then I usually just have one more after lunch. I love meals because I see all my friends, and it’s a really awesome community in that I feel there are multiple tables I could sit at, with both freshmen and upperclassmen. Then I usually do homework, attend meetings, or work. As a distracting side note, I am currently drinking a Butterbeer latte. Mmmmmm. Anyways, once people start finishing class for the day we hang out or do homework together. I go to this one friend’s room all the time, and everyone just sits around talking, doing homework, and eating ice cream we stash from the servery. Sometimes I’ll do homework or watch TV in the commons with people.

Basically, Rice is super chill and awesome, but everyone is going to have different experiences. :)

I’m a freshman as well. I don’t have class before 10 am any day, so my day starts a little later. Some days, I won’t come back to my room until 5 pm because I’m busy with class/lunch/meetings. Other days I only have one class. Evenings are very free (as others have said). Many clubs meet at night. I tend to do a lot of my work then as well, usually in some common room around my college. I am usually in bed around midnight, although other choose to stay up later, or go to bed earlier. I like my sleep…others don’t as much.

The residential college system is truly incredible. I love the atmosphere it creates. You basically have a college family. Plus, its super easy to get involved in how your college runs. (I’ve only been here two months and I’m already a committee head, with a budget.) Room situations differ from college to college. I’m in one of the new colleges (McMurtry), and our rooms are awesome. Very spacious, and doubles have their own bathrooms.

If you’re really interested in Rice, come visit! Seniors can arrange to stay overnight through admissions. You’ll get to stay in a residential college and go to classes and just experience life at Rice. Rice is just awesome.

There really is no average day. I have class from 9:00-11:00 am, then 1:00-1:50 on Mondays and Fridays. I only have one class, from 10:50 am - 12:05 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. On Wednesdays, however, I have class essentially from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm (Freshman Seminar - lot of work, but totally worth it). Then on Wednesdays I have my college’s Cabinet meetings. Other than these few things, nothing is really guaranteed. There are usually sports games on weekends and some weeknights, a lot of people go to Pub on Thursdays, and there are always fun things to do on weekends.

I personally am heavily involved in the Student Admissions Council, and also keep myself busy with college sports/government, Habitat for Humanity, Rice Quest Scholars, and so on.

Here’s what I did today:
10:30 am - wake up
10:45 am - help us get ready for our PowderPuff game against Wiess
11:00 am - game against Wiess
1:00 pm - lunch
2:00 pm to 5:00 pm - reading and unintentional nap
5:00 pm - dinner
6:00 pm - reading
7:00 pm - watched the Cards game with a friend while working on math
10:30 pm - watched videos and socialized with friends
12:30 am - logged onto here while watching a show with friends
1:00 am - going to go do my German homework

A “typical” Wednesday might look like this though:
7:45 am - wake up
9:00 am to 11:00 am - class
11:00 am - get organized
11:30 am - lunch
1:00 pm - class
2:00 pm to 5:00 pm - class (Freshman Seminar)
5:10 pm to 6:00 pm - matching prospective students with hosts
6:00 pm to 9:50 pm - homework and/or socializing with friends
10:00 pm - cabinet
11:00 pm - homework, then bed

I could probably try to do a “typical” day for every day of the week and there would still be several empty slots. It varies depending on what opportunities there are on campus. For example, I have a meeting regarding a spring break opportunity tomorrow, and a week or so ago I went to watch the Phils perform after Cabinet. The only thing I can say for sure is that no matter what you are doing, you will have an insanely awesome time here.

I’m going to confirm Adam’s comment that you should request an overnight visit. There’s a good chance I’ll match you, and so far I seem to be successful at matching prospective students with good hosts. You’ll stay with your host overnight; they’ll show you around their college and Rice, show you what an evening/night at Rice is like, and take you to a class or find a class you can go to that interests you. It’s a great experience, and I highly recommend it.

I feel like I should also give you a perspective of a typical weekend as well. Keep in mind that I’m somehow who heavily parties and this is certainly not what EVERY student does EVERY weekend. However, this is what a social weekend might look like…

Saturday.
12pm or so: Wake up. Get something to eat in the servery.
3pm: Go to the gym.
4-7pm: Get some work done.
7-8pm: Go out to eat in Rice Village with friends.
8-11pm: Get some more work done.
11-12am: Pregame. Light drinking/beer pong.
12am-2am: Attend a public party if there is one. If not, go to a private party. There are people who drink and do NOT drink at both of these sorts of events.
2am-whenever I fall asleep: Hang out in someone’s room. Be lazy.

I hope that gives you a bit of perspective as to what someone might do on a weekend! Like I said, I party pretty heavily so there are definitely other options for what you might do.

^ That seems to be a fairly typical Saturday, for me as well as many of my friends, the only variable being the consumption of alcohol depending on the person’s preferences. Party attendance is quite large at Rice, even among the non-drinkers. People here love to go out and have a good time.
