I was reading a lot about colleges and GPA required to get in. A lot of them have an average of 3.8 + , well the ones i want to go to. My question is, does that mean if i dont have a GPA that high i wont get in, or even if its low like 3.6 or 3.7 i have a chance to get in? My gpa unweighted is 3.5-3.6, but weighted its 4.1 going to be 4.2 soon. I went through a lot my freshman and junior year which caused me to drop very low. I use to be ranked 3 but because of my mistakes and problems i dropped to rank 20-30. But i still am in the top 5% of my class. So if anyone can enlighten me that would really be appreciated. Thanks.

GPA is only one part of what colleges look at when considering your application. If you’re looking at high-level colleges, which seems to be the case with the high GPA that you’re mentioning, your under-average GPA may still be balanced out depending on your standardized test scores, course load (APs/Honors courses, etc.), extracurricular and essays.
