I hear the average GPA of highschool students who apply to Stanford is 3.9, however I'm looking around, and I see many who have a 3.9-4.0 unweighted GPA were rejected, and mostly those who were accepted have about a 3.7-3.8 unweighted GPA. Why is this? Is the "average GPA" (3.9), weighted or unweighted? Is it only for certain classes? Certain school grades (10th and 11th only)?

academic classes only, grades 10-12

Stanford states on its website that the majority of applicants accepted have unweighted GPA's that range from 3.6 to 4.0 in the most rigorous curriculum that is available in their high school. No further breakdown is provided.

^Actually, they link you to a common data set, which is where this person probably got the 3.9 from (I've seen it with my own eyes).

To the OP, you'd have to have seen every single accepted student (thousands), so I imagine whatever group you're seeing with the recalculated GPAs doesn't necessarily represent Stanford as a whole in terms of admitted students. My 2 cents.
