on collegedata.com, it says that the average gpa of students accepted into columbia is 3.8 and that it is 3.83 for princeton, but it seems that the majority have a gpa >3.9.
us news also says that princeton's average is 3.83, are any of those numbers true?

is that bad? that's unweighted, and many kids come from challenging high schools, and many kids with extraordinary talent have lower gpa's because they haven't had the time to devote to schoolwork, or some successful applicants are great at one subject and okay at another, so yeah it makes sense

no, its great, but it seems that most of the accepted kids on here had straight A's and those with a lower gpa were rejected.

I had a 3.83 and got into Columbia, so I guess the average fits.

A lot of people on these forums are the top 10% of the applicants.

Ick, I have a 3.48! Granted my school's average gpa is a 3.2 but still...

i have a 3.9

Yeah, they sound about right

maybe one or two B's throughout high school, not too bad, remember, most accepted people were ranked in the top 10 of their classes regardless of GPA

i have a 3.6 but i'm top 6% haha 24/410... lotsa people transferred... that's not terrible i don't think

I have a 3.7 uw but I'm in IB, so it's been all AP/IB or pre-IB all four years, do you all think that's too low for a realistic columbia hopeful?

Not at all.

if nobody minds my hijacking this thread for a sec., could i get a quick appraisal of my chances?
3.7 uw, rank 20/650
1560 SAT I, SATIIs:800, 710, 700
national merit finalist, ap scholar with distinction, national french exam and french congres awards
9 years of violin, 7 years swimming and now coaching synchronized swimming
quirky essay but I put serious effort into it and I think it shows
so what kind of a decision should I expect come RD time?

I would love to try, but according to the ED round, Columbia's decisions were the LEAST explainable out of any college discussed on CC, at least based on stats and relatively objective qualifications. My guess is they put very serious weight on the personal part of the application. Perhaps they scrutinize the essay moreso than other schools do. Maybe recs get a particularly detailed read.

I'd say you have as good a shot as anyone, but those chances, while above average, still unfortunately do not make you a definite admit.

Joey

thanks joey, at least that keeps my hopes up and helps with the long wait until RD time.

frenshman: 3 B's
soph: 2 B's

game over?

(but I took 10 subjects under the UK curriculum.)

I have my fair share of Bs, I certainly hope that 5 wouldn't make it impossible to get into Columbia. I'm sure that if those are hard classes taken as part of a challenging courseload you've still got a fighting chance.
