Average GPA

Today at the welcome ceremony for new students, President Mote announced that the average high school GPA for the incoming class of 2013 was 3.93.
Do with that information what you will, but I figured someone on here would want to know.

That doesn’t shock me at all. I am betting that class of 14 will be higher due to our economy and that UMD has been trending up in college rankings. There will be kids hat would love to go OOS to somewhere like UVA or UNCCH, but can’t afford it so they go to UMD, which in turn ups the caliber of students matriculating and UMD’s ranking.

I think that GPA is weighted, so it’s not as daunting as it may initially seem.

I would guess it is too, but it should highlight some additional points.

1.That means many of the students are coming in with a lot of APs or Honors, so if you are just a plain old student with only 1 or 2 AP’s this might be an issue for you.

Weighted and unweighted are usually only off by 0.5, thus the uw would be closer to a 3.5

As the gen. admit increases, so will the scholars, gemstone and honors program. Thus, the kids that got in with merit 2 yrs ago may be too low now. I believe for the class of 12 the avg w was 4.1 for scholars, by now it could be 4.15, and if they increase so will gemstone and honors. This of course is bad for the student applying, but makes UMD happy because they are becoming more elite, which is what they want in the end anyway. Use their ACC counterparts as an example, they would rather be more like UVA and not Va Tech or UNCCH and not NCST.
