Hello all, I have been thinking about returning to school for engineering. This is something I really want to do but I’m worried about failing out. Going in I would be willing to make any sacrifices necessary but am worried I may not be smart enough. I was able to get an A in college Algebra and general Physics 1 but that is as high as I went in math and science. What I’m getting at is would someone who is average intelligence be able to make it through an engineering degree with a lot of hard work?I’m wanting to do either Mech, Chemical or environmental.
‘average intelligence’? From what you described isn’t the lack of intelligence but the lack of knowledge? If you are worried about failing out, I would suggest reading some books, watch youtube videos, etc to prepare. One very important thing you need to succeed is confidence. Don’t go into school thinking that you have ‘average intelligence’. Go into it with the mindset that you will succeed. I believe that the fact that you are considering to return to school shows that you have high intelligence, and I believe that given the appropriate preparation, you will make it through engineering school.
You can do it. Hard work beats talent!
I know people who have gotten through this and saved money by doing a community college Engineering program with a direct transfer to a four year college Engineering program. The CC offered a nice support system to get through all the core math and science. There was no need to worry about transfer credits because the program was direct from CC to 4 year.
Go for it! You never want to have to wonder “would have, could have, should have.” I can also tell you today’s market is looking for Engineers who also have people skills, social skills, organizational and other skills. There is a plethora of Engineers who have the academic background but in the work world it takes more than just a degree.
