Average kid, Average stats, above average schools?

GPA after senior midyear reports 3.51 w i was ranked 80th but i think i might jump to about 70ish or 60 ish so we will go with about a 69 rank just for the fun of it

SAT - 720 - math 590 - english; 1310 total

SAT II math IIC-640; physics-600; english-550

Classes - junior year - AP calc ab AP Us History AP Stats, AP Chem, Senior year - AP calc BC, Ap Physics, AP Gov. inaddition to these classes taken Honors and one of the hardest course loads through my senior class if not the hardest. computer math - took that in soph year

EXTRA's - Cap of debate for 1 year; in debate for 4 years; sec/treasurer - its academic team(4 years); sec/treasurer - signet(4 years); SCA(1); Key Club(2); Guitar for about 7 years; used to play soccer but not for the school (had surgery); DECA( 1 year); Freshman class council; worked at Circuit City for 2 years

well u probably guessed it i want to go into eng. probably chemical/biomed.
im from VA, and i am Indian. the top four school i applied to i wanted to know what ppl thought.

schools
-UVA
-JHU (haha i probably have a snowballs chance in hell)
-CMU
-Tech

i posted before but some of the stats were different since then so i thought i would get your opinions now...thanks in advance.

btw...for vtech i sent 3 letters of recommendation even though they did not request any,..im not sure it that helps?

for UVA my sister graduated there

for CMU - my cuz goes there, and i got a call saying if i had any questions and that they recieved my app..not sure if everyone gets one or not...

Bump any opinions?

anyone? 260 so views and no replys....

Hi Logitech...I hope this doesn't sound too harsh! For all of the schools you are applying to, your GPA of 3.51 would be average or below average, but the college admissions counselors might be willing to forgive that if you attend a very rigorous prep school. I don't know about the rank because you didn't say "69 out of ___". If your rank isn't that high, but you go to a very competitive high school, again, the adcons may let you slide.

Since you're interested in biochem/biomed engineering, the math score of course matters much more than the verbal. Although I personally think a 720 is an excellent math score, for JHU and CMU it's not particularly remarkable (remember, you'll be competing w/ lots of applicants with 780-800 on the math section). It's at the 75th %ile for UVA, and a bit under that for Georgia Tech. Your composite SAT is at the bottom half for JHU and CMU, and middling for UVA and GA Tech. Your SAT II scores are so-so, I'd expect higher from someone who's math-oriented, the SAT II writing score is pretty poor.

On the bright side, you've sought out a demanding curriculum in high school and have a pretty rigorous course schedule with lots of AP/H classes that have to do with your intended field of study, so that's a big plus because it shows the adcons that you are willing to challenge yourself (no child development class here, lol). Good job!
By the way, what did you get on the AP tests you took in 11th grade? Remember, you can withhold the scores of any tests you think you did poorly on.

EC's are not bad, and and it's great that you've had leadership roles in several of them. However, there's nothing that would really make you stand out, or make the adcons raise their eyebrows.

Heres my Safety/Match/Reach breakdown for you...
UVA: M, because you're in-state and your sister graduated from their (being Indian probably won't help much though!)
CMU: R, because of the low-ish test scores, I don't think that the fact that your cousin goes there really counts for anything, and usually that admissions office calls or sends you a letter saying that your app. file is complete, so that is not much of a distinction.
JHU:R (more of a reach than CMU)
GA Tech: M/S (their acceptance rate is 70%, which is pretty high)

Hope this helps!

Oh, whoops, I feel silly. When you said Tech, I thought you meant GA tech. I'd say VA Tech would be an easy safety for you. Your composite SAT I score is above the 75th %ile there, and VA Tech has a pretty high acceptance rate (69%). With or without the recommendations, you have a very good chance of being accepted.

I've been admitted to VATech and i spoke to and administrator personally and she said that this year they tear up letters of recommendations immidiately, because they're useless, and they're always positive so why read them?

and by the way you're definently in to VATech

i feel stupid too its 69 out of 350 my bad. but yea i figured vtech wouldnt be to much of a reach...im still wondering about UVA and CMU,...tho JHU i know i could basicly toss that out but who knows. sorry for not including rank before

...bumpylump

anyother opinions?

Of the colleges you listed I only know much about Vtech and UVA (im from VA and in the same dilemma you are).

VA Tech: SAT-wise, you're good to go. I'm not sure of the average but it isn't above a 1310,and the high math score will look good to them. Also, as a confidence-booster, my friend recently got accepted to tech, early-decision with a 3.6 GPA (although he did not take as many AP classes as you, so that will also help your chances) and a 1080 on the SAT.

UVA: This may be a little more difficult for you, only because of your GPA. I think your SAT scores are good enough, but your GPA is a little low for UVA. Also, despite what most people think, UVA accepts more out-of-state students than in-state :-(. On a positive note, they will take into account the difficulty of your classes, so the many AP's will definately help.

I dont know much about the other two schools but i hope this post at least left you feeling confident about VA Tech (which i assume is probably your safety school).

Also- if you're looking for other good in-state schools, you may want to consider the University of Mary Washington. Your GPA is a little low for them as well, but your SAT scores are above the average and they accept a great deal more males than females, so that, too, will help your chances.

since ur in engineering your sat is the best highlight. especially math. your gpa is kinda bad, and so is your rank. uva is crazy about that. i will tell u this. I am just like you. Indian. 1300 sat. 3.65 uw. 65/488 at the time applied, but now 53. 4.32 weighted gpa. i was deferred from uva early because of my grades ( yes they specifically told me that)

hmmm. lol. i had already replied to your chances thread. you have so many of em
