I was reading from another post that Exeter has about 3 1/2 hours of homework each day. This seems like a lot. Can anyone tell me the average number of hours of homework (based on conversations with students) at Exeter vs. other schools?
That’s pretty much what I get! At public school. I tend to get ahead on the weekends, though.
I’m curious about this too.
It seems to be around 3 -3 1/2 hours a day at my kid’s school… And then there is a lot of work that gets done on the weekends, too…
At Lawrenceville, we get about 50 mins to an hour of HW for each class, and so on an average 4 class day… 3 1/2 seems right. And then on the 6 class Monday it’s rather bad… 5 hours or so.
Basically, besides classes and activities, you are working (unless its sleeping or eating). This includes weekends… vacations are for decompressing (my 100th post!!)
At most schools, expect ~20 hrs/wk
Same for Choate.
@jdewey - Congrats! 100 posts!!
3- 3 1/2 hours sounds right. I almost want to say it’s more Junior year… at least that’s how the kids made it feel. It seemed like they were always working around the clock with their backs against the wall. III Form, IV Form and VI Form not so much…
(I am officially addicted ) I think it’s safe to say…
That sounds accurate based on what I’ve heard from upper-formers.However, I would have to say based on what the freshmen at my school (Choate) and my friends from other New-England/Mid-Atlantic BS say, it’s more lie 2- 2 1/2 hours of homework freshman year. I do note a significant addition sophomore year and then again junior year though.
Yes that, with a good hunk of time on week-ends is about right–definitely more that 2 1/2 hours. Not all of the work needs to be done at night though as the kids usually have blocks of free time during the day too–it seems like my kid used to use a block of time before lunch to get stuff done. One nice thing about Exeter is that there’s no mandatory study hall, so the kids can study in each other’s rooms, which makes all that studying a little more fun.
Another vote for, “That sounds about right.” We have slightly less homework freshman year, and slightly more in upper level classes, but 45-60 minutes per class is the norm.
@heartburner If you are currently an 8th grader, you should understand that all high schools (public and private) will give more homework than you are used to.
Thanks natakwali. I am a parent and I don’t remember doing any homework where I went to high school. But I did not go to a very good one.
My daughter in public school does much more homework than my son in BS reports doing. Of course, she has A+s and he doesn’t…
@twinsmama Come back in the fall with an update
@heartburner: You said that you felt 3.5 was a lot. So that begs the question: “How much homework do you think is right for a student at a rigorous BS?”
Just asked my daughters and they said between 1.5 and 3 hours, depending on the night. Using free periods wisely (i.e. not socializing) is key to getting everything done on the heavier nights.
I think this a great question btw…because I think a lot of admitted kids have a serious wakeup call when it comes to rigor/workload come September. And not just at the ACRONYM schools…
I had a serious wake-up call arriving at public high school!
The more busy I am, the more productive I am, to be honest.
@SevenDad - It’s a good question. I don’t think that we had 3-4 hours per day of homework as undergraduate students. And we took 8-9 courses per year. Since the BS kids are taking 15 courses per year with more homework, it seems like they are doing more than students at top colleges. I am thinking 1-2 hours per day of homework should be sufficient for supplementing an already very packed schedule of academics.
Which BS kids are taking 15 courses a year? My kid has never had more than six and needs special approval for six.
