Average percent of need met?

Most NPCs ask preliminary questions that are basically the dependency test. They will ask for parental information only if those preliminary questions indicate that you are dependent for college financial aid purposes.

If you are still dependent for college financial aid purposes, but your parents are either uncooperative or have significant income or wealth but won’t contribute to your college, then you need to build a merit-seeking college application list. See http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/1678964-links-to-popular-threads-on-scholarships-and-lower-cost-colleges.html for lists that may be of interest.

Regarding percentage of need met, that is only an average over all students receiving financial aid. A college may meet need for some students more than others (e.g. a public school may meet all or a high percentage of need for in-state students, but offer very little or no financial aid for out-of-state students). In addition, what it defines as “need” can differ from one college to another.

It would be hard for someone who wants to have the need met at an OOS public school. Your scores would not get you into those need met private either. There are a couple OOS public that have need met or generous aids to very low income students like UNC and UMich, but again, your score won’t get you there. Note that even with a need met school, you still have your contribution plus loan amount. You should consider all these in your total cost.

University of Michigan guarantees to meet full need for instate students only. The school is working on increasing that to include OOS. But this applicant would not likely get accepted at Michigan…or UVA or UNC-CH where OOS students do receive full need based awards.
