The average SATs for admitted students to Northwestern for the class of 2013 rose 11 points to 1473. Admitted students in the top 10% rose to 93%. The admission rate remained essentially the same at 27%.

I have often wondered what the statistics are of the 73% who did not get admitted. How many of those were ‘not even in the range’ on scores? And, of those ‘in the range’ what was the biggest factor of not getting accepted? I wouldn’t think these stats are out there but I’d sure be curious to know. The 27% acceptance rate sounds fairly low (not as low as HPY), however, what would be more interesting is the acceptance rate of those applying that ‘seem to fit’ the admission scores. Anyone have an idea?

O.O

My 1410 brought it down.

representing the 7% not in the top decile.

ha. my 1380 brought it down more. sorry guys :(

My 980 brought it down.

1420.

Wow! I didn’t realize Northwestern’s scores were that high. I’m viewing the student body in a whole new light!

Sure, the acceptance rate is much higher, but these kids are much brighter than I thought! Brighter than myself included.

SAT does not necessarily correlate with intelligence. I know national merit scholars with 0 common sense.

You’ve got to be kidding, BleedingBlue. The average score rose by only 11 points…

Admit rate for internationals: 5.8%!!!

Wow, our acceptance rate didn’t decline? Interesting.

I can tell you the admission rate for those that ‘seemed to fit’ the admission scores from four years ago (keep in mind that their were 9000 fewer applicants then, a little over 16000 and a higher admission rate at that point compared to over 25000 today).

At that time, those with a verbal of between 700 and 800 had an admit rate of 43% (50% with a verbal over 750). With less than a 700 verbal score, the admit rate was 22%.

Those with a math score of between 700 and 800 had an admit rate of 40% (45% with a math score above 750). With less than a 700 math score, the admit rate was 21%.

So four years ago, approximately 60% of applicants that ‘seemed to fit’ the admission score profile were rejected. Of course, approximately 20% of applicants who didn’t fit the admission scores also got in. So there are clearly other factors that enter into the admission process other than the SATs.

Clearly grades are a big factor in not getting accepted. Four years ago, of those finishing in the top 5%, 45% got in (52% if you finished first or second in your class, thus grades aren’t everything either). But if you were outside the top 5%, the acceptance rate was only 16%.

“Admit rate for internationals: 5.8%!!!”

No way haha. Now I’m in even more shock and disbelief of my acceptance haha.

Werner5482 - WOW! Thank you. That was what I was looking for!

<<< 52% if you finished first or second in your class >>>

Ouch! Flip of a coin?

haha… wow… i’m only 173 lower on the SAT and not in the 7% not in the top 10%
i’m the type of person that lowers the average to give hope to some random junior :)

thank you northwestern :)
