Average Sats? Student Profile? Whats It Like Going For A Northener?

I didn't think I wanted a school out of the Northeast exept Miami and Michigan but am realizing there are so many awesome schools in the South. Wake Forest is a school which I thought would have been out of my league and still might but I am wondering what their average SAT's are? Are they weighted very heavily?
How would a low GPA but strong SAT go over there? Is it even worth my applying with a combined math/reading of about 1380-1400 and a lowish GPA? I do have good recs and strong ecs.

And last.............what is it like for someone born and raised in NY to go to school in the South? I know there is much to be said about southern hospitality, and the ones I know are super nice. Is there anything that makes it difficult for someone from NY? Are the kids from the South much different? Just curious. Thank you!

Yeah, I think you would have a good chance with a 1400, even if your grades were on the low side a little bit. Our SATs are about 1330 or so, but that rises every year. I think it would certainly be worth applying to, and you have a good shot.
I am from NJ and I find I fit in well, but Wake isn't a true southern school in the sense there are lots of kids from the North, particuarly NJ/NY/PA/CT. I would not worry about the southern factor one bit.

My sis lives in Winston-Salem (where Wake is located), and she says the locals think of Wake as a Northern school! They do seem to have a higher percentage of kids from the northern states. Having said that, it is also thought of as one of the better schools in NC as well, so apparently the northern aspect isn't soo bad!

We visited last summer and were highly impressed with the school spirit, campus, and classroom visit. Very much an intellectual feel as well.

I'm formerly from the South and have been in the North for more than 20 years now. Definitely more of a welcoming feel to the south, more courteous and relaxed. People look you in the eyes and smile. When you get down there, watch people eat....slowly, up here in the north they eat like they have a train to catch! It was one of the more striking differences I noticed when I came up here.

Definitely apply.

I'll preface this paragraph by saying that I'm not 100% sure what I'm about to say is true, but I'm pretty sure it is. Wake looks for well-rounded students. This means that a student with lower SATs and GPA can still get in with stellar extracurriculars, stellar recommendations, and most importantly, stellar essays. So put a lot of time into your essays and give Wake a shot!

Also, Wake's average SAT is probably in the low-to-mid 1300s if I had to guess. I'll try to point you to some concrete data if you would like, but now I have to cram for exams!

Here's a link to the average SATs up until Fall 2005:
http://www.wfu.edu/ir/factbook-2005-2006/pdf/p12.pdf

I would bet that the incoming '07 freshmen class will have an average SAT in the mid-1300 range, considering the current upward trend and considering the spike in number of Wake applications (in part due to the successful football team).

hahha, as a northerner I must say: I LOVE the South.

I really cannot see a negative to being in the South other than that some people in the North make fun of me for living here. When its snowing up there ... who get the last laugh? :)

i had a 1500 sat but a pretty low gpa (3.7ish. it was a 3.4 freshman year) but i got in and will be going there next year. work hard on your essays and show that you are a good kid and it'll all even out in the end.

My son was at Wake the last two years and though he is from NC, he said he felt like he was in school in the north. Most of the people he met were from NY, NJ, PA.

Actually there are more southerners, but I think the northerners feel right at home. Here are the true numbers:http://www.wfu.edu/ir/factbook-2005-2006/pdf/p22.pdf

flylikeapenguin- is that gpa weighted

it is weighted with a 4.0 max
