Just wondering I'd love to go to stanford and I know that getting in is super hard, what would you say the average stats are for a person who has a pretty fair chance of getting in?

Average SAT is probably around 2200-2250 range

Average UW GPA is probably 3.8-4.0

Average class rank is probably top 1% to top 5%

Average SAT 2 scores are probably 730-800

statistically, that’s my guess

edit* the most competitive applicants also probably have 3-5 honors/AP for each year in HS

Average sat I’ve seen is 2170
Gpa ~4.4
Uw~ 3.9

But to be honest they could pick the highest gpa and sat candidates and they would be higher but they don’t because they look for people who will do things in life not just get good grades/scores

^However…consider this hypothetical (and on CC, very real) student:

SAT I: 2400 single sitting
SAT II: Literature: 800, French: 800, Math 2: 800
ACT: 36 single sitting
AP Classes: Calc BC (5) Biology (5) Chemistry (5) Euro (5) Microeconomics (5) US Gov (5) Macroeconomics (5) Statistics (5) Language (5)
GPA UW: 4.0
GPA W: 4.6
Class Rank: 1/600

ECs: solid, but relatively standard…a few clubs and part time job maybe

I would think that this person is almost guaranteed admission to HYPSM, regardless of the fact that their extracurricular endeavors are not particularly distinguished.

thats a bit scary, and ive definitely seen ccer’s with those stats! thanks for the help y’all

just for clarity, i wasn’t saying you need to be like that hypothetical student to get into stanford…99% of the applicants (maybe more) aren’t.

we’d probably be able to help you out a little better if you gave us a brief academic/extracurricular profile of yourself…give you some suggestions (in addition to stanford!)

Oh lol I’m just a rising sophomore but so far as far as ec’s go:
Member of Japan club (will be president junior & senior years)
Member of pokemon club
Volunteer SSAT tutor
Member of math club
Member of habitat for humanity
JV/V girls soccer
Was a part of crew that helped to restore our local historical museum
Teen volunteer program at the hospital so far already 90 hours
And the summer before senior year I reaaally want to try to get into the RIBS summer program at UFC :/

Edit I also work at an ice cream shop in the summers but idk if that really matter
Gah just saw that you asked about academics too uh 3.89 UW school doesn’t rank (I go to a public elite, think Stuyvesant) school does not offer any regular courses.

I dont think so.
Few of my friends and I had similar stats (all of us had 2350-2400 range, 35-36 Range, Multiple 800s on SATII and 3.95-4.0 UWGPA) with extreme course rigor from extremely competitive HS (school do not rank).

We got waitlisted or rejected from HYPSM. No single acceptance among us from HYPSM.
BTW, we are all Asian males.

Sucks cause I’m Asian too :'(

Pmubity pmub pmub

I read a post by a Yale student who said (s)he would never have applied if (s)he had known about this site with all its students with intense extracurriculars that are applying to top schools. So don’t be discouraged by some of this.

Just get the best grades you can for now, and keep yourself informed of some of the opportunities that this site loves to talk about. The National Merit competition (if you take the PSAT junior year), TASP (some sort of crazy summer program for juniors), Governor school (if your state has one), national arts competitions (YoungArts, for example) - all of these are ways that some students make it to Stanford without exactly the above mentioned stats. (And some give you a chance to do things you are passionate about within academics, instead of focusing on letter grades).

Nonetheless, having those stats will help you get in (all I’m saying is you don’t 100% NEED a 2400 SAT or even a 2200).

Oooh I heard about TASP. I took the PSAT as a freshman no prep and got a 191, so I definitely think I’l be around the National Merit commended student range

20more and sophomore, 2400 is NOT a guarantee at any Ivy. It simply means a very above average IQ but thats probably it. If you take an ivy acceptance for granted and think u deserve it then u r doomed.

I think they were just trying to show me what a normal applicant could be up a against

Andreswun - saying that a 2400 is representative of a ‘very above average IQ’ is even sillier. Standardized testing is based almost entirely on the amount of preparation a student makes, and not on his or her individual intelligence.

i wasn’t saying 2400 alone, but the confluence of a perfect SAT score, perfect SAT 2 scores, perfect gpa, perfect class rank certainly solidifies an applicant’s standing

that’s not to mention the commonly cited statistic of 50% of applicants with a 2400 get accepted to HYPS caliber schools

Standardized testing is based almost entirely on the amount of preparation a student makes
Not true! I dont think you can get 2350+ by practice alone.
Also, you do not need that much prep to do well on SAT or ACT.

If you take an ivy acceptance for granted and think u deserve it then u r doomed.

???

I was trying to say that HYPSM admission is unpredictable and HYPSM admission is a lot more difficult for certain race.

I think Flux is saying that only because he/she has a low standarized test score (I didnt look at his/her posts at all). Well, eating sour grapes is quite common, and understandable too. Ok, then 2350+ takes no intelligence, and as long as you study, anyone can get it. My point was 2350+ doesnt mean acceptance into the best schools. That was my argument.

Oookay lol. Thanks for the posts though guys, so I guess I’ll try to aim for a 2200+ which I think might be feasible

Bump if anyone else has helpful tips :)
