I'm getting a little worried about my stats because I hang around a lot of people with REALLY impressive hs records. Can you guys tell what my chances would be at these colleges: Illinois-Urbana Champaign, UT-Austin, Maryland-College Park, Indiana U, U of Florida (by the way, I'm out of state for all of them)

Stats:
HS GPA: about 3.55 W( where I plan for it to be after junior year) and I've shown a steady progression throughout high school
SAT: math- 720, Reading- 710, Writing-720- i'm gonna take them again
my HS doesn't have class rank (stupid...), but I go to a pretty competitive school

Extracurriculars/ awards:
lots of volunteer work (animal shelter and others), worked as bagger at grocery store, art club member (hopefully president next year), various awards for district art competitions, various national poetry awards, National Student Leadership Conference this summer, "Who's Who amongst American High School Students" (or something like that), California Scholarship Federation member, recieved an Academic Letter, thinking about taking a class this summer at the local community college

Other:
Should get pretty good recomendations from teacher and counselor, assume my essays will be pretty good- I'm a good writer (not to sound egotistical...)
AP/Honors classes: AP European History, Honors Chemistry, AP U.S history, AP English Language, AP Studio Art- plan on taking more senior year

So, any thoughts on my chances would be much appreciated!

your SAT scores are fine, but your GPA seems low. I think you will have trouble getting into UT and maybe UM-CP, but you should ge good for the others.

Yeah, I've been told UT out of state would be a reach for me. Indiana looks interesting because I want to major in journalism, but I hear that it has a party school rep, so I'm a little skeptical. Does anyone have any more info on Maryland-CP, U of Florida and UIUC? Illinois seems to have a good academic reputation, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to get in... Man this is so nerve-racking and I'm not even a senior yet.

I think you have a good shot at UIUC, your SATs are above their average I would think. Essays will be important, so spend some time working on those.

Indiana has gotten away from it's party school rep a bit. Applications have gone up 20% this year, and it's becoming more academic. You would be in line for a 7,000 scholarship per year (minimum), and even the potential for the Wells Scholarship (full ride, everything) with your SAT scores. Look into that. You have to apply for it VERY EARLY in your senior year, within the first month. You could also make it to the Hutton Honors College there.

Also look at Ohio University, they have a great Journalism school in the Scripps School of Journalism, which is highly selective, you would be guaranteed $13,845 per year in scholarships. You could get into their Honors Tutorial College, which is also very good.

I think your chances are great at all these schools, but i'd like to know a UW GPA, as that's what colleges will do to your GPA.
