I'm an average student, aiming for GA TECH & TECH
Gender: Male
Ethnic: Vietnamese
GPA: 3.946
Rank: 36/511
SAT 1: 1900 (will retake this october)
I've been to US for 9 months. Permanant Resident of Georgia (will this be considered in-state student?)
No honor or AP(my old school didnt have any)
No EC or Community service ( honestly because they dont offer any in my country)
I will try my best to participate in as many EC and CM as possible in my senior year 2008.
I am working as much as possible to improve my SAT score.
I am a newbie here, please overlook my stupid questions and give me an evaluation for my chances. Please also give me some counseling if you have time. I am highly appreciated.

anybody know bout emory or GA tech? :(

hellooooooooo, I need your helpppppppp :(

Crisoliva,
Here goes as the mom of rising seniors, we live in Georgia, husband is Georgia Tech alum in Mechanical Engineering. I would definately call an admissions office at Tech this week to introduce yourself and tell him about your situation. To my understanding, Tech is not using the writing portion of the SAT for admissions- only the CR and Math- what were your scores in those areas? If English is not your first language and the writing section was difficult, all schools will need ( I think ) to know that. Go to the Tech Admissions section and look at the profile of the this year's freshman class. That will give you an idea of how your Math and CR scores compare to their admitted students.

Your GPA and rank are well within range. A school cannot fault an applicant because AP and honors courses are not offered there or the student does not access to them locally. However, you have to get to know the admissions team and let them know what makes you unique. Continue to work on SAT prep to be ready for the October test date. The people at Tech are great and the education is superb.

In my opinion, Emory would be a huge reach, but I would at least contact someone in Admissions to see what guidance they can offer. Also, check at GaCollege411.com on the web for more info about instate status, etc. There are real people you can go in and meet with who will be delighted to help you.

Good luck!

Thank you so much Mrs Georgiatwins. I'll definitely do what you told me to. Also, my SAT break down is 500CR, 760M, 640W. English is my second language and I actually started to learn 9 months ago when I came here. I'm spending the whole summer working for the OCT SAT, 6hours/day and I think I'll get 100 more on CR and 50 more on Writing with this speed. Today's saturday so I have to call them on monday. Hope that they're willing to help me. Thanks again for your counseling.

Hi Crisoliva,
I hope your summer is going well and that your SAT prep is productive. Just looked at your reply on 6/23 and hope you were able to make contact with adcoms at Georgia Tech. and the staff and GeorgiaCollege411.com. While you CR is low, your math score is incredible- and probably what one would expect for a non-english test taker. This probably sounds "out there", but I would also contact Oglethorpe University in Atlanta. Even though it's a private university, the school has significant merit money available and is a member of the Atlanta consortium ( not sure if this is the correct name) but students can take classes at some of the other ATL. schools including Tech and Emory. Continued good luck to you.

i was just skimming your information, but its incredible that you have a high SAT writing score for someone who started learning English 9 months ago- you're ~140 points above the average score on that section, beating out all those native speakers! good job, and to answer your residency question: most state schools DO grant you in-state tuition if your parents pay the state tax in addition to the federal tax, even if you are a J2 dependent of J1 visa or some other variation of a non-immigratory visa (if you're on something like a G visa, even better for you), so ask your parents and also doublecheck by emailing the colleges you want to apply to.

Good luck! great job

Thank you all for your replies. I did call GA Tech and all they could give me were the information about last year's freshman. They said they couldn't give me any advices or suggestion nor could they chance me. My summer has been going well. I think I digested around 500 big words already. This will definitely help me.
@collegekid123: I am permanent residence and I think my visa is immigrant visa. Thank you again.
