3.3 GPA
1100 SAT
He plays varsity soccer and track.

University of Colorado
University of Oregon
University of Washington

Any other suggestions? He's very into sports and wants to go to a big public school. I don't think he's interested in either of the Arizona schools.

If he goes to a public school out of state, its going to end up being the cost of a private in any state.

First obviously he should look into his state’s colleges first. If he’s in cali just like you, then obviously their’s lower tier uc’s and cal states available. San Diego State University might be a match.

Other than that, maybe Florida State university,

His parents are wealthy and said that they’d pay for him to go anywhere that he can get into (including private schools). He wants a public school with big time athletics. SDSU doesn’t have a very good reputation and is seen as more of a party school. That’s why he wants to go out of state (he doesn’t have a chance at Berkeley or UCLA).

Colorado State University
Indiana University
Ohio University
Miami University (OH)
Washington State University
U of South Carolina
Western Washington University
U of Alabama-Birmingham

Lake Washington- some of those are good suggestions, especially Indiana. Alabama - is that their main campus? I don’t think Western Washington has big time sports nor does Ohio University.

If you are interest in Alabama also look at Auburn. Can he get the 1100 up to a 1200? If so, he would have a lot better chance at a variety of schools. Also look at LSU and Tennessee.

Western Washington University is a fairly reputable Division I-AA football program. I think the NCAA recently revised the classification of the I-AA schools into some totally unintelligible format.

Forgot to mention that Ohio University is NCAA Div. I all the way, including football in the well-regarded Mid American Conference. Ren Rothlesberger anyone?

Western Washington is Division 2, the division for smaller or less committed publics and privates wanting to offer athletic scholarships, not 1-AA (now known as the FCS subdivision)

I definitely agree with University of South Carolina (as that is where I currently attend), but he should also consider:
Clemson University
Penn State University
University of Pittsburgh

Also, look at the schools in the SEC and Big 10 as these schools tend to be on the larger side and very good in many sports.

I’m going to assume you know enough about schools in Oregon and Washington. In the Midwest, a list might include Colorado, Kansas, Iowa, and Indiana. If your friend has any interest in applied science/technology/engineering throw in Kansas State and Iowa State. Outside of Vandy, few SEC schools, if any, will have the academic reputation of Big 10 schools. On the plus side, they will be less competitive in terms of admission and less expensive to attend. A list here might include Georgia, Florida (really huge), and Tennessee. I actually second Tennessee - a good school (I’m not going to argue that it’s great), with an outstanding athletic program. Others might include Alabama, Kentucky, and South Carolina.

If you’re into sports and you want a big public school, you need to go to a BCS conference school.

Here’s BCS public schools where a 1100 is at the 25% mark or higher
