Average Student...

Hi... It seems alot of you are applying to IVY League schools and stuff so I know this is out of the norm.

Alright so here is my stats and stuff

White Male/NY
Great Public School

GPA: 3.5 Weighted(I sucked 9/10 grade, Upward Trend)
SAT: 1180 ---I think im gonna walk in on the ACTs comign Dec. 12, nothing to lose.
School Doesn't Rank
Mostly Honors and a few APs this year
Good EC's(Debate Team, Interact, Key Club a few others)
NO JV or Varsity sports(I was injured 9/10 grade) but I particpate in a lot of intramural athletics and out of school sports.
Good Community Service
Good Recommendations
Strong Essay

Heres where I am applying or interersted in applying to, let me know if I can get it...

Im looking to major in Sports Management or Business(Entrepreneurship, FInance or Hotel Admin)

UConn
Temple
UMass-Amherst
Indiana-Bloomington
Ohio State
Florida State
Ohio Univ.
Univ. of Georgia

Please feel free to recommend some more schools... Im looking more towards public though, can't afford most private schools.

We're not all applying to Ivies...

I think you have a decent chance at most of those schools but is there are reason you aren't applying to any instate schools? Typically its easier to get in when you're instate especially if you have state honors/distinctions. I'm not really familiar with any of the schools listed(although I visted UMass and loved it... but decided not to apply) so I don't want to make specific predictions.

Good luck!

Out of state public schools are not always the best bargain. Consider researching what the average final debt of graduating students is and you might find a private school with decent financial aid is better for you.

New York has the CUNY and SUNY system that might also be affordable. An alternative is to go to a community college and do well and then transfer. I have known Cornell graduates who went through that door.

I want to get away from New York, I probably will apply to a few SUNY's but Im not really worried about getting in them and they aren't all that high on my list... My dream school would be Babson but I have no chance of getting in there... oh well. I might look at Community Colleges and see if I can transfer, but two more years living at home would really suck. I have researched these schools and all or most are affordable(in the 13k range). Im not paying for most of my college education, my parents are and Im lucky enough that we're in pretty good shape financially, however I have 1 sister in Graduate school, and another at NYU and a brother who is a freshman at Maryland College park, so yea, tuition bills at these schools really add up.

Anyone know if Ill get into UCONN with these numbers, thats my #1 choice.

Thanks

You probably would get into UConn. Their average SAT is 1126.

However, UCONN is becoming harder to get into. Their business program is pretty difficult. I've heard it's extremely difficult for out-of-staters to get in as well. The good thing is that if you aren't accepted into the business program, they may place you in the general studies program.

UCONN is getting ver tough to get into. That is definetely true. However, I'll tell you that Babson is a good match for you maybe a slight reach but you never know. People with your stats get admitted I'm sure just make sure you tell them that you LOVE business.

Babson a match? I don't think so... the average SAT is 1250 there and it is "Recommeded" you take an SAT in Math and Writing... Also, my grades in Math suck, I suck at MAth(somehow managed to get a 600 M 580 V), but I like business, go figure... I doubt many business schools would be willing to accept me after looking at my past math grades, oh well. Its a school I would go to and study entrepreneurship, I know they are the best school in the nation in that and Im sure it is more selective than other parts, plus it is expensive (39k total without Financial Aid).

Thanks for your input though. UConn would be nice... Its not sound all that encouraging, I did apply Early Action, will that help at all?

Stop quitting on yourself. I told you that you have a decent chance at Babson. Yes, your math scores maybe low. However, what have your grades been have you had A's and B's in math. Have you taken a challenging math schedule such as honors math or AP. Also if you want to study entrepreneurship have you done anything entreprenurial in the past? Have you started a successful business. Have you written business plans or entered competitions been involved with your school's chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America or any other business related club/activity?

You are a classic one brainwashed by CC. SAT's are not everything. You have an upward grade trend. A solid gpa. Good activities. You have taken A.P's. So what you aren't the greatest in math. A 600 math score isn't the worst thing on earth. Are you telling me every succesful entrepreneur had to have been good in math? I don't think so... You are definetely underestimating yourself by having such a negative outlook.

University of Connecticut is a rising school. Thanks to I think 2 billion dollars in state funding Uconn will grow one day into the likes of Michigan and Virginia and UNC-CH. Yes it may take a while but I think one day it will get there.

Uconn's business program is also rising. I think you can get in. People get in with 1100 SAT's all the time. You have a total package which is more important then one test score.

Im not quitting on myself, haha don't worry dude, usually Im told im to optimistic. Anyway, A's and B's in Math? hell no, I've been in regular level classes from 9-12 and have trouble getting a solid C.... WHen it comes to being in a math class, I have bad ADD, I just don't care usually, i daydream and lets face it, you do bad in 9th grade math and don't pat attention, you set yourself up for failure in 10-12th grade. Plus my H.S. has had a habit of letting in Math teachers who struggle very badly with the English language and culture. I've had Korean math teachers(this isn't a knock on Koreans) 3 out of 4 years that I just couldn't connect with, their English was poor and they didn't understand how the average math student thought, probbaly because they were always so advanced, I think I put more effort into laughing at their poor pronunciation with my friends in 9th grade then I was in doing the math, ohh well.

One more thing, i sent in my app for UCONN as Pre-Kineiesiology as my "intended major", If I get in, is this set in stone or can I easily tranfer into a businnes program... I think I put Genereal Studies as second choice. From now I should I put General Studies on my apps?

Thanks

No cause for community college whatsoever. You can get into some fine schools with those stats. Don't be discouraged by the number of geniuses on CC.

see elizabeth was right but your low math grades might hurt. scores aren't everything but if you struggle to pull a C I honestly don't see how colleges will see you are very math inclined. Since you have low grades as well as scores that might hurt. Explain your situation though about the whole communication barrier. Definetely apply to Uconn and Babson two places where I think you have a good to great chance of getting in.

UConn- dont know their stats
Temple-def
UMass-Amherst-big reach...HUGE reach (really good school)
Indiana-Bloomington- def
Ohio State-def
Florida State-def ( florida schools esp. FSU are SO much fun by the way)
Ohio Univ.- dunno?
Univ. of Georgia-reach

Getreal, UMASS-Amherst is a state public University, their AVG SATs is in the lower 1100
s, I definately think you're thinking of AMHERST College, where Im not applying... thats the good "amherst".

thanks for the input though.

ohh ok..sorry about that

getreal411 - I think you're mistaken about Indiana. The Kelley school of business is very difficult to be accepted into as a freshmen. I believe their website says that they will only consider students with a minimum SAT of 1270. They are also ranked #11 (for business) by U.S. News.

sheesh..sorry guys..im just helping this kid out? you don't have to bash me on my own opinions

wow!! we're applying to a lot of the same schools! like you, i applied to ohio state, ohio univ, and florida state. i just got admitted to ohio university today! my first choice is univ. of florida or florida state. i have a 3.5 gpa and 23 ACT by the way.
