Average Students Accepted to their Top Choices

Hi, my name is Asia. (OneofSeven...continents :-D) I have been reading this site since my junior year and one of my favorite topics was the "what are my chances?'' The posts about average students are the ones that really stand out because it gives a bit of solace to know you're not the only one that hasn't published a textbook for children in Africa or found a new specimen. But honestly, these people aren't average. A 3.6 GPA??? Are you kidding? I wish I could at least smell it.

So anyway, I got into two schools. Haverford and GWU. The chances that I go to Haverford is about 99.99%. Yes, it was my top choice, but it's not a complete 100% because of that .01% of doubt. I looked at the Haverford College forum and read some of the stats of the accepted students and they're impressive! 4.0 unweighted with immensely high SATs. Enough extra curriculars to fill two Football stadiums and I am getting nervous. I mean, I know I'm not exactly the C student, but I am not an A+ student either. I am just me.

So my question is this: How many of you people actually are average students that got into your top choice? Since most people here have an obscured view of what average is, let me remind you that it is not a 2200 on your SATs with 3.8 GPAs. I had a 3.0 with an 1800. (And yes the recommendations, essays and such were incredible if I must say so but I want to know more academic wise) Thanks

Congrats, Asia! :] You are an average student! ^_^ Blah I have a 3.21. ><; My GPA slipped because I got a C+ Chemistry and a C in APUSH. :/ I need to keep it up. I don't think there are average students on CC, Asia. Seems like everyone have a 3.8 or higher.

I would have to agree that you're right. It seems like a 3.8 GPA is low. Should I consider just dropping out? Just Kidding :-P

Really though, it's hard to imagine that I am the only one with this type of situation.

Some guy got into Haverford with a 1870 and a 3.6 GPA. I also read around CC of a girl that got into Columbia with below 1900 SAT scores and didn't even make into the top 40% of her class. Congrats on your acceptance and you'll do fine at Haverford.

you definitely aren't, lol. i don't think i'm even in the top 15% at my school, with a 3.1uw/3.6w gpa. i used to think i was a good student... till i took ap classes and started coming to cc.

i'd like to hear some replies as well :)

I have a 3.2 strong upward trend/1800/little to no ECs and i got into all three i applied to: bowling green, michigan state, and my safety wayne state.

i'm even in the top 15% at my school, with a 3.1uw/3.6w gpa

you're top 15% w/ a 3.1? I'm barely top 50% at my school and i have a 3.2

I had a 3.47, top 12%, 30 ACT and got into my top choice: Tufts.

Oh, I can completely empathize with you...the school I plan to go to (UCSD) has this terrible thread where everyone lists their stats. I used to think I was a competent student until I went there...and saw this ****load of amazing scores and ECs. It needles me to feel so unworthy but perhaps the representation on CC is only a small cross section of reality...

3.0 UW/3.5 W (essentially, a little lower W), 1460 best score SAT (Verbal and Math only), no real ECS, nothing else out of the ordinary, got into Stonehill and Marlboro (two of my top choices).

Asia- you will do fine at Haverford. Yes, the people around you will be excellent students and you will be challenged. However, you must have some wonderful strengths to have been accepted to Haverford and GWU. Don't sell yourself short. AND-remember that most of the people who post on this forum are NOT average students. They have an above-average interest in the college admission process and an above-average interest in highly selective schools. You are speaking with an elite population here and it CAN be a little discouraging. Let us know what you decide.

Yea don't worry. I feel if you got in, obviously admissions felt that you could succeed at the university.

My GPA slipped because of my pcalc honors teacher who was the devil and physics (C and C+ respectively) I finally dropped out of precalc honors, into precalc and I'm sitting on the cusp between an A and A- (92.77). I should have dropped down way earlier.

I'm so more average than all of you. :)

So now I'm looking at like 3.57, looking upper 3rd quintile, so like top 60ish out of 150 and 2100 SAT...hopefully I'll get into UMich-Ann Arbor...Ross is just as good as NYU Stern and I'll save $10k over Stern.

i said 'i don't think...', haha. 3.1 is unweighted, we do deciles by weighted gpa, thank god. and i've been taking all honors/ap track since freshman year! (i'm hoping for a 3.8w by the end of this year... unlikely cause i'm dying in physics)

i'm applying to umich - ann arbor also! :) good luck. and god, math and physics completely ruined my gpa also. YAY for us non-elitists.

Good luck to you too :)

=] Hey it's good news that I'm not the only one on CC that got a C+ and a C on the report card. [feels better] ^^

Of course, I cried a lot when I got that. ;)

Yup, average but not average.

Junior, 3.57/2100, asian, despises science, spiders, insects and reptiles with burning passions, worst class is science, best class is history, fascinated by the stock market, first choice=NYU, UMich, intended major=Finance/econ, wants to become stock/currency/mortgage trader.

2100, that's a good score. >] I wonder what I'm going to get on the May SAT test. :] I depise science too. :[ How can you hate butterflies? Gee, you sound like me, except the insects and reptiles part.

Except for butterflies and other pretty insects...

I don't consider butterflies insects...for me insects are the gross yucky ones like cockroaches, crickets, worms etc.

shudders i despiseee insects. i'm kinda similiar to you... except not the history part, lol.

me - junior, 3.67w/2200, asian, loves english/languages (but i manage to double in science every year...), despises physics but somehow i'm good at math, hates history with a flaaming passion, and my dream school is tufts university, i want to either be premed or an ir major. (which excels in both! yea, the premed will be tricky with me severly lacking in science skills, haha)
