Hi, I am a white student from Massachusetts and this is my first post.

Here are my stats:

GPA: 3.3w 3.0uw
Class Rank: 50/210 (Top 25%)
SAT 1 Scores: Critical Reading: 660 Math: 500 Writing:620 (9/12 on essay) *Planning to retake in October.
SAT 2 Scores: Bio (E): 680 US History: 710

I don't take the hardest course load at my school, but it is definetly above average. I took 2 AP's this year (school only offers 2 AP's per year starting Junior year.) Scores haven't arrived yet. I am also planning on taking 2 AP's next year as a senior.

Extracurriculars:
-Basketball (9-12)
-Cross Country (10-12) Captain as a senior?
-STUCO Class Representative (11)
I have a basketball related job during the winter and I am employed this summer.

Besides numerous safety schools I am planning on applying to U-Mich, U-Fla., U-Conn, UCSD, Cornell (Legacy), and Penn State, and would love to hear you rate my chances.

Thanks for your opinions!

to be honest, your chances are slim to none, the scores are way below par for Cornell

omg, i am usually not mean or anything, but dude ur chances of getting in are as good as my chances of becoming bill gates, good luck!, hope both happen.

I know my chances at Cornell are not good at all. But what do you think about my chances at the other schools i listed?

Cornell is a huge reach. Michigan is a big reach. Penn State and UCSD I think are reaches too (although I'm not too familiar with them). I think UConn and UFla are matches.

Raise your SAT to a 2300 and you will have a good chance to getting in.... is this a hard school

You won't be able to get into the University of California at San Diego.

As an out-of-state student UF might even be a reach for you. You have no safeties on your list whatsoever.

I don't know that UConn's a match. First of all, UConn only admits 50% of its applicants, so it's one of the harder public schools to get into. Second, most of its out-of-state students are caucasians from Massachusetts. With those scores, that GPA, and few extracurriculars (which are centered almost entirely around sports), I wouldn't really consider it a match. I see your chances this way:

Major reach: UCSD (out-of-state); Cornell; Michigan
Reach: Florida, UConn
Unsure: Penn State (I don't know enough about them)

Also, just to add to that, please please please don't believe SATs are all that matters. It's not your scores that are a turn-off so much as your GPA and lack of a strong high school curriculum. If you chose not to take more AP courses, that's going to hurt you more than almost anything because it shows you turn down challenges. Is there any way you can take more next year than you're currently planning?

If you're going to apply to Florida and UConn -- and I think you should, because they're your best hopes and chances -- be sure to show /somehow/ in your essay that you're not someone who takes the easy way out, because your transcript might give them that impression.

I really do wish you the best. You'll get in somewhere good. :) Might not be Cornell, but it'll be good.

Thanks for your post Beginning. My school only allows 2 AP courses per year. Believe me, if they offered more i would take them. My GPA is low largely due to my freshman and sophomore years which i basically- and stupidly- did not work to my full potential during . This year I took AP US History and Bio and honors English and pulled an A in all three. However my level one classes, (also my two weaker subjects) Spanish and Algebra did not help my GPA (i got a B/B- in both.)

Do you by chance know your grades for each class, each semester from each year? If they've been going steadily up, that will make a big, big difference.

You will need to find some safeties with those scores and GPA

I probably have my exact grades lying around somewhere but they would be tough to find at this moment. Basically, all i am saying is that although my grades have never been astounding, my A's in my three most challenging classes (AP History and Bio and Honors English) show that I have the potential to be just as good as other students in those areas.

Do you have any safeties in mind that would fit my criteria? I would be interested to know. Thanks.

UMass is a definite safety for you. What's your intended major?

I would like to major in English. Also, can you list any other safeties or matches that you think may suit me, preferably out of state.

Bah, I was hoping you'd have a rare major that some schools are really strong in. Pretty much every school is strong in English.

Okay, so you want large universities, either coast (Midwest or South at all?), an English program, and...what else?

Also... i am looking for a safety/match school that is medium/large in size, suburban/rural, preferably out of state.

Any area is acceptable but i would prefer south or mid-atlantic coast, or west coast (Cali)

American and Delaware might be matches. Perhaps Northeastern as a match. You might have to drop lower in the US News list for a safety. Look for schools that have a 75 percentile SAT in the mid 1100s based upon the old SAT and take a fair number of students outside of the top 10% of their class.
