Hey guys,
I've posted on the forum for GeorgiaTech before and have gotten back pretty much positive feedback. In the past few weeks I have read about the "weed out classes", etc. and I know that I applied EA to tech for something that I actually want to do, Aerospace Engineering. I have good ECs, good grades, and a pretty darn good essay, but my test scores were on the lower 25 percentile of things. 29 English, 25 Math, 31English/Writing which ends up being a 28 composite score. Current grads at tech have told me they were accepted with math being the lowest score, but as a prospective engineering major I know math is one of the most important things. I am confident in my math abilities (I'm taking calc right now, and got a B in precalc last year) but my question is : Do the test scores you have correlate to how well you perform in math classes at tech?

Thanks for taking out the time to look at this post.

Not trying to be a pessimist or anything here, but they will definitely look down at your ACT Math score. You’re trying to convince them to let you study there in order to become a rocket scientist, but you have only a 25/36 score. Anyway you can retake?

You can also try SAT I and try to improve your math there - it only goes up to algebra 2 and Georgia Tech superscores. I think seeing the 25 math will also make them consider the rigor and quality of your math courses in which you got A’s/B’s in. Of course, standardized testing isn’t everything, but that’s just my 2 cents.

TheNexus you aren’t being a pessimist at all. The thing is I’ve taken the ACT twice and I felt much more comfortable with it than my PSAT (never took the SAT but I only scored a 1500 on the PSAT so a 28 ACT is much better).

I felt weird after I received my scores for the second time because I got the same score on my math section. Math was the only thing I really studied for, and again I am confident in my math skills. A 25 ACT math is equal to a 620 math which indicates to me at least average skill. I already applied early and now that I think about a third/final go about at the ACT would have been helpful.

Got it, didn’t know 25 -> 620 or so on math. Of course, below GT’s average, but hopefully the rest of your app can make up for it :). I’m in a different situation :P

Bad grades (HUGE Upward trend 2.9 soph -> 4.2 junior)

Pretty good extracurriculars (related to my comp sci major)

Great standardized testing (2310)

36 ACT Math (800)

35 ACT English (780)

Yeah, hopefully we both get in! To be honest I guess I am just rather nervous before getting my decision. Georgia Tech is my first choice I really would like to be apart of the 2017 yellow jacket class. Even if I could not end up doing Aerospace I would be fine just going to tech for another science major.

Your question was do math scores correlate to how well you do in math classes. The question really is that in my opinion it generally doesn’t because math here is difficult regardless unless you have easy professors.

serious mode answer:
no ur sat/act math scores will not really correlate to ur math scores at tech as the above poster…it will correlate to your math prof n TA and their degree of suckiness instead…if they suck then u can be the most genius kid and still prepare to fail as a lot of kids do. i know a girl who loved showing off as a smartass in my highschool…poor gal baely beats the class average of a 44 in math here and to top it all of, she is a transfer…so def apply for a backup school though in case u have trouble getting in cuz its getting pretty competitive as i see (i always wish i didnt get in cuz i had a full ride at uga that i rejected for tech, and the cognitive dissonance too much to bear that i have to deal with this place here all or nothing…i feel like a waste here n no school shud make u feel that way)… but it cant be all bad u say and yes, on that note, lets bring out a positive: you will actually seriously learn the crap in your class if you get an A, cuz u worked ur butt of the whole semester for it…but do try to have a life and friends and you shud be set for an awesome career in engineering…personally, i wud not choose this place again for pre-med and i regret it here 100%, nah lets make that a 1000% oh well…I (notice im talkin bout maself) III wont make the mistake of coming here EVER again!

more joking and sarcastic mode answer:
aww man i feel bad looking at you guys craving to get in…seriously wow u kiddies will sure be in for a surprise…i remember being in ur shoes then, now so looking to get the hell OUTA this place (using mild language here, in my head thinking of the strong words to put in here if ya know what i mean)…let me warn you its gonna be a tough 4 years or 5 or however many it takes u to get outa here…the degree is valuable though so get ready to work ur butts off for that plump ol paycheck …it will be worth it then so suck it up now and when u get in til u get out! thats what i am telling myself as i study for useless, stupid crap (it will be useful in the real world hopefully)…but we have to suck it up for the mullah if ya know what i mean…if u ask me would i do it over, oh HECK NOO!!..i would choose uga every time.EVERY TIME u hear!!! i want to keep being the big smart fish from highschool wanting to go to med school…why fail here when i can win at UGA everytime!! not here where i have had to deal with crap everyday grr!!! hate this place looking forward to graduation BAbAAYYY!! hellloooo freedom and all good things and best of all, MONEY mONEY MONEY MONEY moneyY MONEYYY money MONEYYYYY MoNEY MONEYYYY (Yes I feel like Mr. Krabs from spongebob right now lol)!!!

ok i know i may be venting a bit here after a bad test grade that i worked hard to study for… i tried to keep the language mild here for u kiddies out there…but seriously, yes u have to work way too hard to get the grade here…teach urself everything for that matter and u will be fine and be a rich ol guy or gal hahaha

khanacademy will save u here everytime lol!! write thst down!

ok so long post, not trying to ■■■■■ but i have an opinion…a strong one too and ur comments wont sway me so dont bother replying cuz that is my last post on here and i wont be wasting time replying if u do want to arguel!! Now Im just dreaming of my MONEY wonderland waiting for me when i get the hell outa this palce and sipping my martini hahaha
