Averages

lol, i see…but i do know quite a few people in my school who actually have a pretty high average, like 92~93ish ones. like if you take band or family studies or whatever, you can get 99s = =///.
a lot of the really high scorers take spares/take an “easy” course to boost their marks.
i don’t know how the unis are gonna know stuff like this, and my ranking probably won’t be super high either…T0T
and what’s REALLY sad is that i’m taking visual art courses (which, to be honest, aren’t the most stressful course…xD but i do have a passion for visual arts, so i think it’s justified that i’m taking them), and the art teacher is wacko, and refuses to give “high” marks…class average for design is like low 70s…

I took vocal music all four years and I was afraid that it wouldn’t be seen as a challenging course. It’s the only “easy” course I’ve ever taken, but I’m also really passionate about music. I’ve gotten the highest mark in the class in grade 10 and 11, I currently have the highest midterm for the grade 12 course (99%), and I sing in all four of my school’s choirs. I’m also Vice President of the Music Council (a position that requires me to be in a music course). The rest of my courses are pretty challenging lol.

@HinderPanda:

I think there’s a question on applications where your GC checks off whether or not you took the heaviest courseload. DWAI, unis will probably be able to seperate those who have “boosted” averages and those who don’t :)

^ Trueeeee. xD I forgot in my moment of panic. xDD

^ Not only your gc but one of your visual arts teachers can mention in rec letter that your score was one of the highest and that you have passion for v.a.

Another thing I found relieving is that standardized test scores help univs figure out how harsh or lenient your school is too. For instance, if you happened to get 780 in sat chem while your school score in chem is 90, univs do know what to expect from your gpa - low 90s at best, not high 90s.

SO don’t worry if you are doing ur hardest.

^ well actually, my mark for v.art was the highest only last year…this year i have a dif. teacher, who doesn’t like my stuff nearly as much = =. i pretty much dropped 10% in my arts marks…96->86…T-T

the SAT thing, some ppl say that if your standarized test scores are really high, then unis get nervous->smart students that don’t work hard enough in their classes…
which would do you think is closer to the “truth”?

checked with my guidance counselor today.
we don’t rank (unless you wanna sit there and count), but the honour roll could be arranged by grade, so we looked up my mark, and i’d be in the top10%
YAYYYY
xD

But I’m gonna try to do better, I think I can make it into the top 5% if I try really hard. xD

my schools does actual rankings. (like 1,2,3…). Just found out.

quintile ranking is not really ranking, but it’s pleasing to see lol
and I do understand how you feel about a 93; asian stress (and it can lower the average by soooo much)

^yea, it really lowered my midterm average but I’ve gotten that mark up some since midterm. Are you a junior too (gr.11)? And does the ranking at the end of gr.11 matter the most? (ie. if I drop to no.2 after first sem. gr12 does it matter or not?)

yesh I’m a junior

and junior year matters the most because it’s the last final grades they see, though they might get your midyear report in before they decide

I’m having all my finals right now, hope I can maintain my grades haha

^wait, what? You have exams right now? Why so early, does your school year end early or something?

Also, aren’t decisions for lots of schools April 1st? So wouldn’t they get your gr.12 first semester final marks?

^ Decision dates for US schools range from early November/late October (ED/EA) to mid-late May (rolling-admission). April 1st is named ‘D-day’ primarily because the Ivies release their decisions on that day. For details on this topic, check out the thread below

As for the report of first semester gr12, yes the universities require them, but they are most likely not going to be the deciding factor regarding your admission decision. From what I know, the US schools only glance at them to see whether you screw up or not, especially for the accepted applicants.
