Avoiding Class Rank

Im gonna be a senior next year and I'm wondering if this is a good idea. My unweighted class rank is not gonna be so good because of HEAVY grade inflation (I have one B which drops me out of the top 5% UW). However, there is one way to get around the class rank. My school releases the class rank on October 1st so if I get my GPA and transcript stuff done before then, there will be no class rank reported (and only my GPA). Any opinions?

I think you should still send it in, because if you’re close to the top 5%, that’s still pretty good, isn’t it?

But for schools like HYPMS not being in the top 5% hurts a lot - wouldnt it be better to just not have a rank?

Does your school only use UW rank, or do they have a weighted rank too? Not being in the top 5% UW because of 1 B won’t matter if you have a better weighted rank.

Won’t work. The school profile your schools sends with transcripts will probably have grade distribution which will make calculating your rank easily. If there’s any question, they’ll call your counselor an get ran with mid year report.

we have weighted (my weighted is around 3/340) but I thought colleges looked at UW (since this is comparable across different HS)

Colleges generally take the grades listed on your transcript, and then calculate a GPA according to their own criteria. Taking rigorous classes is going to be more important pretty much everywhere than getting an absolutely perfect GPA.

How can you be sure that your school won’t hold onto your request until after they get ranking done?

BTW…don’t get your heart set on ivies…Even if you had stellar stats and a hook, the chances for acceptance are still iffy.

S’s HS does not give rank since the most challenging courses does not give highest w-gpa.

Depends on the college. I suggest doing this for the harder colleges but it’d look better for the other colleges if you kept class rank. Ur still in top 6% and without class rank, some colleges will have no idea where u stand since sometimes half the school comes out with 4.0

Your college counselor’s recommendation will most definitely have your rank on it. Sending in a transcript right before your school does rankings will just make you look dishonest.

Edit: This thread is old! Haha didn’t see that.
