Award on the Common App

I'm a student from the class of 2014 (applying next year), and I noticed on the Common App that it asks for extracurricular awards and academic awards.

What do we do if neither of those categories fit for some of our awards? For example, I was principal trombone in my All-County ensemble and received superiors at District/State Solo and Ensemble, but I can't necessarily put "band" as academic or extracurricular. I have a band class, so I don't think it would be right to put it in extracurricular.

Also, what are they looking for in the academic awards section? To what extent do these awards have to be important?

Put all band/music activities in the section, Extracurricular Activity and Work Experience. List the awards you received there as well. If you cannt put everything in the space in that section, list all additional information in the Additional Information Page. The important point is that you get everything that distinguishes you into the application. I am a college admissions coach. Go to my website for more info on what to do. CollegeStartOnline.com
