I was just curious, would it make any difference if the school team that I was apart of received first place nationally in science olympiad, while I did not recieved any individual awards (7th place in all events)? On my college app, that is?
Thanks!
Was your score in any way shape or form incorporated into the winning team’s score?
If it’s a situation where like 10 people were on the “varsity” team that competed and you competed individually separately, then it would be somewhat unethical (although with the right wording technically correct) to write you were a part of the winning team.
However, if your score was factored into the overall score which resulted in your team winning (even though your own score may not have been that high), then you can confidently say you were a part of the winning team (if without your score the team’s overall score would have changed). Does that make sense?
To get to nationals, I factored into the team score, however at nationals, my score did not affect the team score. So, you are saying that although it is truthful that “I was a participant on the team that received first place”, it would be immoral?
Hmmm that’s a tricky one. In this case, I don’t know if you could say you were a “member of the national champion team.” It’s really something that’s up to you. In my opinion, it’s immoral to say you were a member of the team when you didn’t compete, but in your case it’s a little trickier.
I guess it would come down to this… do you have other awards/accomplishments that you consider better than this one? If not, you may want to put this one down. Either way you should list it, but you can choose for the phrasing to be either vague or explanatory.
