Awards or Extra Curriculars

Hi,

I am kind of confused as to where I mention certain achievements. I.e. if I won research competitions / became finalists in events like ISEF do i put this under research in the EC section or under awards. Another example is DECA- I won states but is this considered an award or under the club description. I would assume awards so that I would have more time to talk about my time in the activity itself, rather than competition but please let me know.

You would write these under the 150 character description of your activities in the activities list section. For example, you would write DECA, your position, your time commitment, and then any awards or achievements you have. Make sure to prioritize these by putting them at the start of the descriptions, and have the activities with the most commitment at the top of the list (top 5). If you can’t fit them all under the 150 character limit, you can write them in the additional information section, but make sure NOT to overuse this as doing so can create a negative image. I would say if you really can’t fit it in, use concise bullet points listing any achievements or roles you want to mention.

Hope this helps!

Thanks so much! So what would I use the awards section for then? I know there is a distinct section for that; however, I am a bit confused as to what to use that section for if I am mentioning them under the extracurricular section

the awards section could be used for academic achievement and recognition whether within your school or nationally. If the awards are related to an activity like yours are, when you list the activity you can list the awards related to it in the description section.
