Awards

Hey everyone!

I just had a quick question about awards and how much sway they have into admissions. I know that NMF is considered a "standard" award among some Ivy League applicants, and that national awards (like Scholastic or major math competitions) can cause major sway in an applicant's admission.

But...what about regional ones? This can include Book Awards, local writing/music/art awards, National Merit Commended, awards for local scientific research, etc. They certainly can't hurt anyone's chances, but I don't think they have very much sway, and don't look as impressive when compared to national recognition. In an ideal world, an officer would look at an application holistically and note ECs, scores, etc...but would having small awards be enough to get someone into a top-tier college?

Thanks SO much! This whole process is so confusing.

All you can do is present the best application possible… show every award, EC, etc. that you feel represent you and the contribution you have made so far to your school/community/etc. That’s all you can control, so that’s all you need to worry about… good luck!!!
