Awesome Music School Facilities

@violinmom29 My daughter lived in the dorms for two years, but then moved uptown with friends, which saved a lot of money. (She also did not like the cafeteria food, so having a kitchen was a big improvement.)

I have been into BU, Ithaca, Mannes, Juliard, Skidmore, SUNY purchase, SUNY stony brook, Bard, and NYU, for my son’s piano auditions and other opportunities.

Two things.

  1. facilities wise - buidling and rooms: Ithaca was good. Bard is also good, but small. I second that Skidmore has nice music building. Mannes also has nice building, so does Juliard (probably the best that I have seen since its s, but couldn't get in, tight securities).
  2. Practice room wise (which I think it's much more important than facility itself), you have to consider what you have in the practice room. For this, NYU was best. It looks like all brand new steinways pianos (and other instruments too, such as drums and others) and excellent sound proof system. (brand new? probably not true, but they are in much better conditions than any other). Mannes also has very nice (mostly Steinway) pianos, but it looks like it has been played like crazy (understandable). SUNY purchase has also very nice and many Steinways (They said they have 15 and they don't have that many piano students). BU has huge and modern practice rooms facilities, but the pianos' condition doesn't look good. They told me that NEC students and others all come in and play BU's piano.

Overall, if you were to go to school based on facilities, I would choose NYU. NYU’s program is in one of their dorm building, so it’s strange, but what’s inside is really great. (didn’t consider the performance hall)

@glassharmonica, talking about Juilliard cafeteria food!! My S is always loudly complaining about it! He calls it “prison food”. I remember from summer camp thread that your D is going to PMP this summer. She will love their food! My S has been there as a “littles” for 5 years and enjoyed their food. They always hire a great chef from NY :)>-

Thanks, @violinmom29 She’s been to PMP’s chamber music program in the past and she told me the food was wonderful. I’m curious what studio your son studies in–she probably knows him, although she is a bit older than he is.

@glassharmonica, I PMed you :smiley:
