awpe results

I haven't received mines but my friends got into Engl 004 and Engl 005. Does both of those meant you failed the AWPE? or people who failed the awpe take a different english class? I've looked on the courses website and they both say you needed an adequate score on the AWPE to be in it. Thanks

Your friend kinda did, but didn’t super fail it and get put in “Basic Writing 003”. He is a quarter behind in English, but it doesn’t really matter since most people cant get English 1B or 1C in their winter and spring quarters and end up behind anyways.

so i got my results today and i didnt pass.
it says that i have to take english 004 and (eng 004D or 004L)

Does anybody know how long it will take for me to get back on track and take the English 1 series?

@laststand
You’ll just be a quarter behind and wont start the 1 series until winter quarter. As I have said before, most people (whether they passed the awpe or not) dont finish their English sequence after the first year so its not a big deal. If your concerned about that you can take summer bridge at UCR (late july-early sept.) so you can start 1A in the fall.

Sigh…I got Engl 004. Upset right now. >.>
Honestly I thought I would have gotten at least B material…

So, should I take the summer session that it ‘strongly recommends’?
Or will I not be so behind that I will still be able to be on-time with 4 year grad?

I also have the same question as degenerated ^^^
I got placed into eng 004 will i still graduate in 4 years? Please someone answer this is very important, thanks everyone

I got placed in Eng 004 as an incoming freshman (well, I didnt really take the test). Trust me, it looked like half the incoming class was placed into Eng 004. Im on track to graduate 2 quarters early (a little over 3 years). You need to take Eng 4, then 1A, 1B and 1C (some engineering majors dont need to take 1C). However due to budget cuts, 1C is reserved for graduating seniors. Luckily, I got a 1C spot for this summer (Im going to be a second year with junior standing). Being placed in Eng 004 isnt bad, it just means you will have to take one more class.

I was also placed into Eng004. I’m extremely confused that I didn’t even pass the exam. I was pretty happy with my essay so I feel that I was incorrectly placed into that class. :(

@kimberlyyy - it really isnt a matter of whether you were happy or not with your essay. College english courses look for very specific things in essays: Grammar, organization, flow, consistency, enforcing a thesis and not repeating it, structure… the list goes on and on. You dont want to get placed into a class that is not of you caliber and get lower grades. (In college, grades are all weighted so a B- is a 2.7). View this as an opportunity to refresh or enhance your english writing skills.

I was like you too, thinking I was better than English 4, but I compared my high school senior research paper to a paper I wrote in 1A and thank goodness I took eng 4. I wondered why I was so stupid in high school.

Trust me, the people who read your placement essay probably read a 1000x more essays in their lifetime than you have. They know exactly what to look for.

There is NO SUCH THING AS FAILING the awpe. It’s a placement exam. You get placed into a class as a result of the exam. You don’t get an A, B, C, D, or F, therefore you can’t “fail”. Being placed into engl004 isn’t failing. Although it is the lowest english class you can be placed into other than a qualifier class, it’s average. There are 44 sections of engl004 being offered and 40 sections of engl001A being offered. That means that more students are placed into 004 than 001A which means that engl004 is AVERAGE. a “C” grade is average, which definitely is not failing, so if engl004 is average, it’s not failing. You guys are fine. You’re on track, so don’t worry. I got placed into engl001A my fall quarter, only got 4 units of AP credit (that didn’t even go towards my requirements anyways), and I’m still a quarter ahead of schedule. Don’t worry. You guys are doing FINE. keep up the good work. =]

i didnt pass either but where does it say if i get into basic writing 003 or the 004? i really dont understand how it all works really. mind someone explaining lol. like whats the normal writing level class called. btw, is the summer bridge thing worth it? they offer housing?

i placed into eng 004 (eng004D and/or eng 004L) i don’t know if i should take it in the summer bridge program or just wait & take it on the fall & just catch up next summer?? hmmm i’m stressing out a bit! :/

i just checked and got the same results as you. Im going to do the summer bridge. I looked up their webpage and supposedly, they hand out financial aid equivalent to what you received for the school year. So for me, my family makes little money (poverty) so the room and board plus house should not be too bad, i hope! i’d be happy if its less than 500 max or so =[ doubt it…

However, I read on UCI’s summer bridge site that most of their students recieve summer bridge scholarships! (covers most to all costs) depending on need via fafsa, of course.

If you have a free summer, and like me needing to take ENGL 004 and (004D or 004L), do summer bridge. Registration opens july 1.

That clears like 2 classes that i wont need to take over the year right??

@rickster
Check your myucr or whatever the site is. Same place you checked for your acceptance. The sequence goes from basic writing 3 -> english 004 -> english 1A -> english 1b -> english 1c. Enlish 1A would be “on track” and the best you can be placed into. English 004 would be 1 quarter behind. basic writing 3 would be 2 quarter behind and is extremely hard to get placed into unless you speak and write like no english.

As for summerbridge, if your poor enough, it is completely covered by aid (all grants, no loans). At least it was last year. Covers tuition, dorm housing, $200 book money (i actually had to shell out another $40). The class was also slightly easier to pass since the final would just count towards your grade and you just needed a passing grade in the class unlike the main year where you had to pass the class AND the final to advance to 1A. That’s at least how the system worked last year.

On a side note, summerbridge was an amazingly fun experience. Yeah, i “failed” it too, but am still on track.

@ himself
wow thanks for the great information! Can you explain what the " or (004D or 004L)"

an extra class? If i do summer bridge, i probably wont have to do it thought right :smiley: :D

@rickster 004D is a discussion class. Its led by a graduate student and they go over some stuff the professor talked about in class. Reinforce some concepts, tips on the final, etc. Class sizes are small, mines was 4 people. Meets 1 hr a week. Its a pass/fail class based on attendance. You take this in conjunction with engl 004.

004L is some web based thing i think. I didnt have that option in the summer. You just take one or the other.

D stands for Discussion, L stands for Lecture. At UC’s you have a discussion for every lecture. They are just supplements for each other and both are taken at the same time. I also took summerbridge for math last year and it was probably the best quarter I ever had at the university. The regular school year has nothing on summer bridge

@himself

oh i see. thanks you :slight_smile: so hows the summer bridge thing? you said it was fun, was it because of the friends u met? is it okay if i ask a couple of questions? :smiley:

just want to know how the curriculum was like for english. Very hard to get an A?
did u go home for weekends too?

For me, first day of class, i met like one of my best friends in college. Also, the people in my hall were pretty cool and for some strange reason there were like 8 guys and like 20+ girls lol. The workload is pretty light (depending on professors) so you had plenty of time to hang out and explore the school. Me and my friend played through a whole campaign of resident evil 5 in one of the on campus hangout spots. You get 3 meals a day which is way more than you get in the main year. So i packed on a few pounds. There’s probably more memorable things that i cant think of on top of my head.

English 004 is surprisingly hard to get an A. I had the easiest professor and only got a B, which is kinda holding me back now. I had an A up till the final which is graded by other professors and they grade pretty brutal. Same people who grades the awpe grade your final.

I went home every other week. In the main year, i practically never went home.

@himself

haha sounds like fun. the difficulty in english 004 sounds daunting, especially since i really want to pursue grad school; im very interested in law.

I know that gpa and lsat weigh heavily for law school. Would you think that 004 english woud be easier during the school year? If so, then i’d give more thought to summer bridge. i think its very worth it though still.

Like many on this board have said, starting at 004 isnt too bad right? or is there another reason im missing.
