Without knowing anything more about him but a few stats I'd say he looks plausible. But the critical question may be how he is going to answer the "Why Reed?" question on the application, and what sorts of things interest him.

Ok, suppose he writes an excellent "Why Reed" essay and wants to major in Philosophy...do you know the stats for ED? Reed is the perfect fit for him.

I know this is going to sound simple-minded, but let me just say that if Reed is the perfect school for him and he has the stats you report (hopefully with some improvement in the math score) and his interest in Reed and interests in college are well conveyed in his essays, and he has good letters to back up his interest in thinking, he will have a very good chance of early admission. But that's just my opinion.

My S applied ED 1 last year, got in and will be attending as a freshman this fall.

His GPA was only 3.5 and his SAT score was not off the charts. He had a few good ECs, including co-founder of the Political Club and being co- editor on the school newspaper.

Despite the grades & test scores, he is a very good writer and his essays were wonderful. Also, he visited the campus the previous April and stayed in the dorm.

He several campuses and decided almost immediately that Reed was where he wanted to go. I think the campus visit and the essays were critical.

If you can really show that Reed is your number 1 choice you have a very good shot.
My daughter liked it best- but even though they state that they give priority for need based aid to those that apply ED- it made us nervous and she applied RD.
Still she was accepted with good aid even though her grades and scores were decent but not off the charts
She did visit though as well as alumni interview and is a strong writier.
I think if aid isnt critical I would apply ED, Reeds profile seems to have increased among students heading to college, but they do take more into consideration than numbers

I gave my copy of US News to my daughters high school- so I can't confirm- but is that one of the numbers that is averaged from previous years? I know that their acceptance rate has gone down with the increase in apps and their wish to keep the school the same size.
I see the admission rate on their webiste but it doesn't differentiate between RD and ED.The class of 2009's average SAT score is 1409 and high school GPA was 3.974, with 44 percent of applicants accepted.

Thanks for all your input. Our S is an excellent writer and is already working on his "Why Reed" essay. We visited the school this summer and he had a great interview. All your comments helped put this mom at ease!
