***for MIT regular decision

With current SAT score, I'd say waitlisted at MIT.

PS: you can EA both MIT and Caltech at the same time, though the acceptance rate may actually go down somewhat (due to self-selective EA pool).

Hi --- I'll chance you ... but can You chance me too?
<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/538677-please-chance-me-i-d-really-really-appreciate.html%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/538677-please-chance-me-i-d-really-really-appreciate.html</a>.

You obviously have done well in school, because of your 4.0. Your SAT score of 2140 is also pretty good, and you have challenged yourself with 4 AP classes thus far. Your SAT Subject Tests are also very strong so far. I can see that you're involved in school, and you demonstrate leadership in some of the clubs that you're in. However, you seem to be very sports-oriented; it would have been helpful if you joined an academic (nerdy) club in school and did something with that (earn rewards), and MIT does like that kind of stuff.

Overall, you're the typical well-performing student, but I don't think you have the bells and whistles (e.g. competitions such as Quiz Bowl, AMC, or Siemens, etc.) that MIT so frequently looks for. You have the honors in sports, but I feel that you spent too much time with sports in high school for an MIT prospect (I don't plan to apply to MIT, but I know someone and his stats who did get in).

Chances:
MIT: Far reach (SAT + lack of academic ECs and awards/honors)

Good luck and remember to return the favor by chancing me! If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

However, I would like to note that a Far reach doesn't mean you won't be able to get in ... you can never really know unless you try, and it doesn't hurt to try. If you don't get in, it won't be the end of the world.

cummon guys/girls..... any more?? please thanks

I kind of agree with ab2013, but I don't think MIT is that far out of your league. You still have valedictorian status and a very solid academic background in math and science based on your classes, AP scores, and SAT IIs. However, as ab2013 noted, you lack some huge distinguishment in math or science that usually gets people into MIT (though this may not be your fault if you never heard about them). Personally, I think you would be perfect at UC Berkeley Engineering and I don't think there's much to complain about since it's number two in the country after MIT :). I also have a chances thread running right now and I'd appreciate it if you could take the time to chance me back <a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/539705-yo-chance-dis-indian-kid.html%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/539705-yo-chance-dis-indian-kid.html</a> Good luck!

wow this sucks i hadnt even heard of all these things until recently (math science ec's)
what can i do now to make up for it???
and i took a practice SAT yesterday and got a 2310-2330 depending on my essay score, 790 Math, 780-800 Writing, 740 CR so hopefully that means my sat score in october should be at least around there i still have a couple months to prep (it was october 2005 exam)

thanks for this guys/girls does anyone else have anything?

Cure cancer, win USAMO or some other Olympiad, and/or bribe the admissions officers

Your CR SAT score will prevent you from getting in for sure. Get it to at least 700-730 if you want to be in the pool of most competitive applicants of which about 85% still get turned down.

okay, but say i were to get my CR to around 750
then what would my chance be?

MIT counts a 2250 as highly as a 2400 apparently so I don't think any change above the 2300 mark will affect you.

No idea about Caltech and yeah like you I have never heard of any of these Siemens/Intel etc things but are you in senior year?

Do you have a science project you did in high school that was really good? That could maybe go into Siemens but I have no idea, sorry.

MIT is a reach unless you get those scores up. You probably will end up on the waitlist.

hey man, i know that people are saying MIT is a reach because of your scores, but if you can just get your crit reading up to a 680-700, then you'll be fine. your math and science results really math what MIT seems like it is looking for. So with the new critical reading score i'd give you a 50-70% chance of getting in.
G/L
can you chance me too? <a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/541342-chances.html%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/541342-chances.html</a></p>

Maybe MIT/Caltech aren't really schools for you-no offense. It seems that most people that get in do math and science outside of school for the sake of learning it and do well in competitions as an added bonus. It doesn't seem that math and science are a big thing for you, again no offense. Perhaps your essay could indicate contrary, but from the resume' alone it doesn't show too much and trying to do stuff now would be good, but not for the right reasons.
However, because college admissions at MIT/Caltech are so chaotic, I could be wrong. In any case you should still apply if you really want to go, you might get in.
Possibility= 50% MIT
40%% Caltech- they are seriously math/science oriented.

Well, your scores are okay, but certainly could use a retake for the CR score. ECs are good, GPA's great, and class rank is awesome. I'd say for MIT, you'd have a 50% of getting in -- far greater than the 12% acceptance rate for all applicants.

No, MIT counts a 2350 as highly as a 2400. 2250 and 2400 are very different scores.

By your stats, it doesn't look like MIT is the right college for you. I would not recommend it. However, if you truly like everything about it, do apply.

To be honest though, I'd say - far reach, do not expect on getting in. Your scores are still high enough to make you a semi-competitive applicant.

thanks for the honesty guys i really appreciate it
its far better than you all telling me im in guaranteed when im really not lol
thanks
anyone else?

I heard that anything above 2250 is attributed to "luck points" as in one test may be slightly easier, the order of sections may have suited one better, you could be sick...
Btw, the only thing that slightly works in favor for asians in the whole college process is that they are allowed to have a slightly lower CR score (at the expense of a high math score).
As long as you do an outstanding job against your school and students from your school you will stand a chance. Students cannot be compared from one school to the other in terms of activities.
