I am very interested in Rice University's Shepard school of music. However I mostly play jazz and I'm interested in theory. I don't really fit into one of their majors categories. Their website says students interested in double majors can earn a B.A in music. Does anybody have info on this program? Is it taught at Shepard?

You cannot enter Rice as a BA. You must do at least one year in the BM program.
[Shepherd School of Music - Rice University](http://music.rice.edu/undergraduate/degrees.shtml)
Bachelor of Arts

The Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Music is appropriate for students who wish to specialize in music and at the same time receive either a broad liberal arts education or have a concentration in an additional discipline. There is no admission directly into the Bachelor of Arts in Music.

What instrument do you play?

Non-majors at Rice can take some classes at Shepard and I know they have a Jazz Improv course and you can get a BM in Theory.
If you love jazz and theory, why not look at the University of North Texas? They are renown for their jazz program.

Thank you for the help. I know about UNT but I am not interested in it. I know there are not direct admissions into the BA in Music. I was wondering if it was taught at Shepherd? Also I couldnt find any info on the BM in theory program. From what I saw you have to apply as a a composition major or something like that.

The BA is for students that discover that a performance career is not necessarily what they want - or they want more regular courses than you can get in a BM. It is not a matter of “is it taught”. It is a choice after you have at least a year as a BM. The course are the same. The difference is that there are no performance requirements and not as many music course requirements. You are no longer in a performing studio but still have a music professor as an advisor. DD had a few friends who went that route. I commend Rice for making it available to students who discover that they don’t really want the BM but do not want to leave music all together.

The best way to get an answer to your theory question is to contact the music school. They are really nice and will explain it to you. Since O week just started they should be there.

Is it possible to double major with a BM and earn a BA also? Or do you have to switch to a BA in music?

It depends what you want your other major to be. For Rice you have to be admitted to Shepherd to major in music. If you ant 2 music degrees you have to discuss with advisors or admissions. If you want to double degree with something else, you can add that. Degrees aren’t declared until end of sophomore year so you can just start taking classes. However, if you want a science major, a lot of labs conflict with music ensembles.

Really, just call them. They will answer all your questions better than we can.

Does anyone knokw outstanding music schools with a good BA in music (piano concentration)?

Take a look at UCLA. Though if you are OOS it may be expensive.

Besides UCLA and USC?
