I took Chem 3A last semester with Frechet and received a B. I was taking 20 units at the time and didn't manage to keep up with his lectures.

So that said, how screwed am I for Chem3B with Vollhardt right now?

Would reviewing Chem 3a stuff be helpful for chem3b? The chapters build on top of each other, so if I just start on chapter 14, and try to understand everything from this point on, is that enough?

Oh and just any advice regarding doing well with Vollhardt is appreciated!

I don’t know that many specifics about Vollhardt.
On average people’s grades in 3B are one third grade below what they were in 3A.

Getting an A in 3A likely means you can get an A- in 3B
an A-, a B+
a B+, a B and so on…

I had Pedersen for both courses (3A Su08, 3B Sp09), I got a C+ in 3A and an A- in 3B, so you can easily break the pattern.

It is good to have a solid foundation going into 3B, so review all the 3A book chapters if you haven’t already (that is what I did).

What do you mean on average everybody’s grades are 1/3 lower?

By that statement, everybody’s grades are shifted 1/3 downwards, and nobody would have A+'s, which is not the case. If anything, Vollhardt gives out 19% A’s and A+'s while Frechet gives out 16% A’s and A+'s…

Review ALL chapters of 3a? Oh dear…

i had pedersen too and got A’s 3A/L and 3B/L. The only thing that actually helped from 3A was ether and aldehyde chemistry that we did near the end of 3A. Remembering some of the reagent’s names could be useful but just stay ahead by one lecture and you should be straight.

good luck and don’t stress too much if you don’t understand something… just take a day out (well ahead of the next midterm) and learn that sh1t like the midterm’s tomorrow!

It is a generality, not an absolute truth. It is true for a lot of people, but not everyone outright.

Back when I was declaring IB that semester I was taking 3B, that was what I was told about what kind of grade I should expect.

Bottomline, if you keep working the way you did in 3A, expect a B- in 3B. If you work harder, you should be able to get a higher grade.
