B in Mathematics?

Hey guys,

In 9th and 10th grade, I had Bs in Math on my final school report. Last year (11th grade) I got an A.
How bad is this when I'm applying to Caltech? Do I have to write an essay 'explaining' it or would you say it'd be wiser to demonstrate personal qualities with that essay 'slot'.

BTW, here in Austria (Europe) the ONLY mathematical grade I get is plainly for "Mathematics". There aren't any specific courses like Algebra or Calculus, it's just Math in general.

Kind regards,
Europeen

Don’t point out the negative unless you absolutely have some sort of life event that affected your grades across the board. Otherwise discuss your passion and interests and strengths.

I have a similar situation. I got a B in my freshman year geometry class. Felt like crap about it, then got a 5 on BC calc in junior year. In your case, I’d agree with crazymomster and not mention it, just do well from here on.
