Please provide insights regarding strength of journalism programs (particularly broadcast) and college life at these three top choices

I'd pick Syracuse if you're looking for journalism, it's great. BU is good as well but Syracuse seems like much more fun to me.

Maryland's journalism school is up and coming; if you're in-state, this is not a question--go for Maryland.

BU and 'Cuse, being private schools, are considerably more expensive (this is assuming you're a MD resident). However, if you aren't in-state for UMD, it's getting harder and harder to get into UMD as an out-of-state student.

BU isn't known for journalism, but Syracuse is famous for it, and UMD not so much but UMD's journalism program isn't too shabby either. DC and Boston would be great cities for internships, but while Syracuse is known for journalism and communications, the city itself is pretty crappy--maybe Syracuse students go to NYC for internships, I don't know.

Have you visited any of these schools? Are you a Maryland resident?

Go to Syracuse.... Bill O'Reilly went to BU.... BLEHH

I'd say it's between Syracuse and Maryland. I'd assess the location, life, etc. at each schools and decide which you like better.

BTW, Bill attended Marist UG, BU for masters in journalism and, who knew, Harvard's Kennedy school for MPP. And to think I thought he was a dolt.

We live in NY so MD is no great bargain for us, tho less expensive than SU or BU (the most expensive). D is looking for college experience that includes school spirit, sports and traditional campus setting in addition to good academics. BU is weakest for sports, campus and sorority life, but then, it has the redeeming feature of Boston!

So, if BU is the weaker journalism school (have we established that?), then how to choose between SU & MD which appear very similar on paper? Both have new facilities, good reputations and traditional college lifestyle. College Park and Syr are similarly unimpressive as far as cities go? Is there value in Newhouse alumni network sufficient to overcome the long dark winter?

Or does it make sense to drive 6 hours to MD when D can find a similar experience down the road? What else does D need to know about MD?

Hotasice is correct; SU students go to NYC for internships.

cosmo: when we were in your position, UMD was not even on the list; too big, not enough emphasis on new media, etc...and with the scholarship my daughter received from Newhouse, SU ended up cheaper....

The alumni connections from Newhouse sold us on her final decision (turned down Vandy and USC-Annenberg).....even as a freshman, she has access to an unbelievable network.....now if the economy would bounce back, it would help, but she loves it!!!

Very similar schools in terms of the student body though....but I don't think academics for broadcast are on the same planet.....

PM me if you have other q's....been having internet problems, but those should be fixed soon...(cablevision on the way...)

Actually I was told by three seperate admissions people at Maryland at three seperate times that they are trying to reach out more to out of state students (particularly New York). This is shown by an increase in merit for OOS but not instate. College Park is an unimpressive city, but there is a metro stop right off campus that will take you to the center of DC in less than half an hour. Syracuse is not close to any bigger city. Also if you like warmth, it's no competition.

gina: the OP is specifically talking about the journalism program....if they reach out to more OOS students at UMD, they may as well become private; so many NY/NJ kids already attend, but I don't think that it makes a difference to the OP in terms of his/her q about the broadcast journalism program (and I think they are already accepted, btw)

I was mostly talking about the cities. I'm not looking into journalism so I didn't comment on something I have no knowledge about.

Syracuse has the best journalism school of the three, by far. BU and UMD have good j-schools, but Syracuse's Newhouse school is in a league of its own when compared to the two.

syracuse has the best journalism program out of the 3
and if your looking for the whole school spirit and sports scene it also tops that category
location is syracuses only downside

I transferred out of BU because it did not have this, and because it was not worth $50,000 a year. I'd go with UMD, which is likely cheaper than Cuse.

Of the three, Syracuse's journalism school is more highly respected than the other two, and their alumni network is pretty strong.

When you visit campus, and walk through the Newhouse buildings, you'll see a number of things named: The Bob Costas (fill in the blank) due to his support and presence on campus.

Syracuse has a better journalism rep than the other two and I hear that BU costs more than it's worth.
