I'm currently only a sophomore in HS, Pretty Top Grades. Good EC's. Very Sporty. Awards in Sports. Say I wanted to attend USC or something of the same level. What kind of score would I need? I'm taking the SAT's in Junior Year October or so. And i'd like a ballpark range. I'm taking SAT courses and doing lots of personal studying and practicing. Can anybody give me scores i may need? Or feed back. thanks =]

Hey David,

I'd say anything above a 1800 would make you competitive for admission to USC. You'd probably get in with a lower score with your EC's and if you have a pretty high GPA. However, if you're GPA is average to USC's standards (let's say 3.3-3.5), it's really a toss-up. So I'd say try to get the highest SAT score possible...you have LOTS of time. Take the SAT's as many times as you like until you get a score which you're satisfied with. I really can't tell how qualified you are yet (1. You're still a sophomore, lots more time to improve/develop...plus, I don't know how you will do in your next two years of high school...you'll be pretty competitive if you continue this way 2. I don't know how competitive USC will get in two or three more years.) Other than that, I think with a good SAT score, you have a very good chance of getting into USC (My friend got into it with an average SAT score and around a 3.4/3.5 cumulative gpa...his essays and recommendations helped him, however).

Good luck!

If you go to the USC forum you'll see numerous threads on who was accepted and not this year. USC is pushing up its standardized scores and GPA, but still seems to be available to candidates with lesser credentials if they present something interesting.

according to my rejection letter you the average candidate had straight A's and a 2100 average SAT (or a 32 ACT) its getting very competitive and it isn't going to be easier in the up and coming years.

I agree with m1a2c2kali

Just spoke with a friend today whose son was rejected at USC with a 4.0 but lower SAT. She said that he needed a SAT score of 2100 or above to be competitive (he had great ECs)

South Carolina or Southern California?

Southern Cal focuses on the SAT more than many other schools -- NMF receives tuition discount. I know of one local kid -- 3.3 gpa (in college prep classes only) and a 1580 who was admitted.

By the time I graduate from High School I will have about a 3.3 GPA not weighted and a few AP's and Honors classes. All my scores will range from 3-5 on the AP's. My teachers like me and I won't need financial aid. What are my chances???

S received his acceptance to USC School of Engineering last week. he had a 2050 SAT (including 790 math and 690 Verbal) and a little above 4.0 GPA and was 10th in his class of about 380.

But he's turning down the admittance to go to the U. of Miami. USC gave NO merit scholarship which pretty much knocked them out where Miami gave him a 3/4 scholarship.

so i guess a little above a 4.0 weighted is a definite factor in getting into USC?

I got into USC with scholarship with a 3.9 GPA and a 2140 on my SAT I's. However, extracurriculars and AP's are also important.
