I am a current college freshman. I am currently a theatre major at UAB (BA). I love all types of performing, however my true passion is Musical Theatre. Sadly, in life, I was not blessed with a good singing voice, capable of the musical theatre level. I want to obtain a BFA in musical theatre very badly, however, I know I don't have the voice right now to get into a musical theatre program. Is it possible for me, to get my basic theatre training (BA), while all the time improving my vocal skills, and then after obtaining my BA in theatre, go and get my degree in musical theatre? This is my passion in life, and no other thing excites me. This is what I want for my life more than anything, it just really saddens me that I can't live out my true dreams and passions, because I am not talented enough. If you can help with any of this, that would be amazing! Thanks for your time!

First of all, a BFA is pre-professional training. It will occupy up to 80% or more of your course hours in college; at Carnegie Mellon - one of the top MT programs in the country - the MT BFA is one math course, one English course, a one-hour seminar, and everything else is MT. If you acknowledge that you’re not an outstanding singer, wouldn’t a BFA in MT be tantamount to someone trading in their higher education for basketball coaching despite the fact that they’re too short?

Secondly, there’s no requirement that musical theatre stars have MT degrees - or any degrees for that matter. Some of the top Broadway stars have no degrees in MT. A BA in Theatre, IMO, is incredibly valuable. In addition to teaching skills relevant to a field off employment, it enhances students’ communication and self-prsentation skills and make students aware of how they might adjust their communication to suit differing audiences. But after getting your BA, you’d just need to be able to sing and dance and continue to work on acting skills. Additional training could help, but it really wouldn’t have to be a MT degree.
