BA at FSU

Hello everyone,
My D was accepted to the BA program in theater. She is really interested in a MT career, and of course would like to get in to the BFA program. We were wondering if attending FSU under the BA program would afford any advantage to getting in to the BFA program, perhaps mid-year or the next fall.
Thanks

Hello,
I'm afraid attending the BA program does not offer an advantage for getting into the BFA program. We evaluate all students individually during the audition process, regardless of their institution of origin. Our audition cycle is for a fall admission to the BFA program.

If your daughter were to attend FSU in the fall as a BA Theatre major and elected to take dance classes and voice lessons, that would strengthen her audition to any BFA MT program. The BA program itself is a general theatre degree and is not performance intensive.

Please post or PM me if you have more questions and I will be happy to help!

I couldn't find an existing thread on this, but perhaps someone knows... Can a student apply to (and audition for) both MT and dance at FSU or are they limited to applying to one program. I know that the student would not be accepted to or be able to enroll in both.

While admissions requires only one major listed in that field of the application, audition appointments are made through the individual department. The major code listed on the admissions screen is not that important. The auditions are completely separate, and it would actually be possible for you to be admitted into both programs and then choose which you would prefer. If you have more questions about this, please give me a call and I will explain it in more detail. (850) 644-5548.

Take care!
Michele

Thank you!

My D is already planning to audition for a BFA MT but has tremendous interest in dance as well. I see in post #3 that you can audition for both separately but I am wondering if it has any effect on their decision...does the applicant appear unsure? In addition is there any information posted about how competitive the dance program is-number of students auditioning vs. accepted?

Hello,
I'm sorry, I have been away from CC and I didn't see the question until now. Auditioning for both will have no affect at all on our decision (MT or Dance.) We have students who audition for more then one FSU program every year. If your D is admitted to both it would be completely her choice regarding which program to pursue, however she would not be able to do both.
The dance program is very competitive, but I don't know their exact numbers.

Best wishes,
Michele

Does anyone know anything about the FSU BA Theatre? If you are accepted academically to FSU but rejected from the BFA-MT program can you re-elect to get a BA Theatre? I see on their website that it is not by audition but is their another process for a BA Theatre? Can you double major in Psychology if you are in the BA program? What about a minor in Dance? Do you know if that is by audition only? If so can you audition for the minor once you are there as a student? If anyone can help answer these questions I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

shelsdad,
If you are accepted academically into FSU you can apply to the BA program in Theatre. The BA program is limited access and it requires a written application that includes a creative essay. If a prospective student indicated Theatre as a major on the application for admission to the University, s/he will be sent an application to the BA program in the mail. If for some reason, the application is not received you can call my office or e-mail me and we will send it to you. I can be reached at (850) 644-7234.

I actually encourge the BA students to either double major or pursue interests that broaden their academic experience. Quite a few do choose to pursue Psychology as a second major. FSU does not have a minor in Dance, but students may take as many dance classes as they like. Beginning dance classes are open to everyone, but the more advanced classes require the students to come the first day to test for placement.

I am happy to answer any other questions you may have. If you would like a student perspective, one of the current BA students who works in my office would also be glad to speak with you about the BA program.

Sincerely,
Michele

Hi,
I was just accepted to FSU for Fall this past week and since I was unable to audition for BFA MT, I am applying for the BA in Theatre.

I already called and made sure the school of Theatre sent me a packet, but my true concern is, What is required to get accepted for a BA in Theatre.

I know i'll recieve my application in a couple days, but I can't help but be anxious and ,quite frankly, worried!

I truly have no idea what i would do if i don't get accepted to the School of Theatre...

I would be glad to hear any tid bits about what to expect.
Also, I'm finding it hard to decide which on-campus housing would be best for someone who is majoring in Theatre (fingers crossed). Any suggestions.

Thanks!

Theatre_Geek15,
I'm sorry, I didn't see this until today. In a BA program applicant we are looking for a student who is interested in exploring a wide range on interests in theatre. A strong applicant will be creative and be able to convey ideas well in writing.

Best wishes and I look forward to reading your application!
Michele

Hello, I have applied to the BA Theatre program at FSU and I cannot find very much information on admissions. How many people are accepted on average into the program (what is the percentage rate of acceptance)? If we are not accepted into the program and attend FSU anyway, can we re-apply during our time at FSU? Thank you.

My DS would like to pursue a career as a comedy writer and performer. He will apply to NYU for his MFA in dramatic writing.

I think the BA in theater track will be best for him where he can double major in creative writing (or interdisiplinary with a number of colleges) I understand he can audition for shows, but do they actually get parts? Can he take performance classes? He has no interest in technical or theater management.

He should get an OOS tuition waiver and bring 45 IB/AP credits, so he will start right in on his major classes.

Would appreciate any information.
