Ba in Performance?

Could someone point me to some schools that offer a PA in Performance vs. a BFA in Acting. My S wants a broader education that a BAF offers. Thanks!!

UCLA does a relatively hybrid program, I believe. It’s like the midway point between a BA and a BFA curriculum-wise, but the student receives a BA.

there are plenty of schools that offer an acting track within a theater major; some schools offer acting classes, but are more theater studies based for the major. You can read these threads for the “usual suspects” like Muhlenberg, Skidmore, etc., but you can also do what we did: to look for schools that were good fits in other ways and then look at the website to see what the major offers. My D had a variety of schools on her list: a few BFA audition, a few of the “better known” theater BAs such as the two cited above, and then some schools that aren’t as “known” for theater, but offered a wonderful curriculum and an acting track within the major. This latter category really depends on your in S’s stats and campus preferences. My D had alot of great options come April as a result.

SDONCC, Thanks for the great suggestion. I think we are heading in that direction as well–will probably audition for a few BFA’s but also concentrate on schools that fit (budget, size, location, etc.) and explore their theater programs. Can you share which schools had programs that interested your D? Sounds like she is a straight actor as opposed to an actor/singer?

A very nice BA in performance that my D and I are really really impressed with is U of Tulsa. It had everything we want - toolbox approach, good connections and visitors, a good showcase, very happy and well educated, smart, thinking kids - probably the most academically picky school on our list so a really good liberal arts education. But they don’t offer a BFA so the BA is performance/preprofessional as opposed to being where they separate out the education people from the performance. They may end up being a BFA soon, possibly, but for now, it’s like the best of a BA and the best of a BFA.

Not well known outside of our area but I would recommend taking a look. It’s audition for scholarships, not admittance, at this point - it’s still a small program as far as numbers though, so there’s really no reason to cap it in order to keep the classes small. And if students don’t progress they should, they will have a review and “is this REALLY the direction you want to go in” talk with them after a couple semesters so they aren’t just taking your money semester after semester if you aren’t going to be, shall we say, competitive.

D loved it but it’s a matter of money for us and we haven’t heard yet. I think it’s a reach, alas. But you never know unless you try.

Chapman in Orange, California offers a BA in performance that is by audition and then offers the possibility of a BFA in Performance or Screen Acting at the end of freshman year which is by further audition.
